Description
Juuzou Sakakura is a prominent character from the anime Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Future Arc. He is a towering, muscular man standing at 190 centimeters tall with a tan complexion, short dark greenish-grey hair, and sharp pink eyes. His intimidating appearance is often accentuated by his choice of clothing, typically a heavy dark jacket with thick fur trim over a white muscle shirt, paired with black pants and long boots. As a student of Hope's Peak Academy's 74th class, he held the title of the Ultimate Boxer, having won a World Championship even before his graduation.
In terms of personality, Sakakura is defined by his roughness, short temper, and a natural inclination toward violence and bullying to get his point across. He is described as one of the most aggressive members of the Future Foundation, with a harsh and demeaning way of speaking that often puts his subordinates on edge. Despite this frightening exterior, his aggressive behavior is frequently a mask for deep-seated insecurities and a fear of being useless or abandoned. He is deeply prideful but also considers himself incompetent at anything other than boxing, a belief that fuels his constant need to prove his worth. While most of his smiles are mocking rather than genuine, he shows a notably softer, more relaxed, and even joking side when in the company of his closest friends.
Sakakura's primary motivation throughout the story is his absolute and unwavering loyalty to Kyosuke Munakata. He serves as Munakata's right hand and is willing to dirty his own hands without hesitation to achieve his friend's goals and protect him from any threat. He considers it his sworn duty to eliminate anyone who stands in Munakata's way, and seeing himself as useful to Munakata is the single greatest source of happiness for him. This devotion, however, is complicated by unspoken romantic feelings for his friend, which he keeps secret due to personal insecurities, leading to a silent struggle with jealousy, particularly regarding their mutual friend, Chisa Yukizome.
Within the narrative of the Future Arc, Sakakura is the director of the Future Foundation's 6th Branch, responsible for maintaining public order and leading the Special Crime Investigation Unit. He is one of the thirteen leaders forced to participate in the Final Killing Game, a situation that severely limits him due to his specific NG Code, which forbids him from punching anyone directly. This restriction forces him to rely on his environment, using objects like office chairs and pipes as makeshift weapons, though it significantly hampers his combat effectiveness. His distrust of Makoto Naegi, whom he views as weak and a potential threat, puts him in direct opposition to the protagonist for much of the story.
The character's key relationships form the core of his development. His bond with Kyosuke Munakata is the most significant, defined by his fierce protectiveness and desperate need for approval. Equally important is his friendship with Chisa Yukizome, whom he treats with genuine warmth and views as an equal, even as he is consistently annoyed by her more excitable tendencies. A pivotal moment in his backstory involves his encounter with Junko Enoshima, the Ultimate Despair. After discovering she was the mastermind behind the Tragedy, he was overwhelmed by her forces and subsequently blackmailed. Junko exploited the secret of his romantic feelings for Munakata, forcing him to choose between betraying his friend or exposing his own secret; he ultimately chose to lie and report Junko as innocent, a decision that filled him with immense guilt.
In terms of development, Sakakura begins as a seemingly one-dimensional bully but is gradually revealed to be a more tragic figure driven by loyalty and fear. His character arc culminates in a desperate act of redemption. After being stabbed and betrayed by Munakata, who mistakenly believes him to be a traitor, Sakakura survives his wound. In a final, self-sacrificing act of devotion, he severs his own arm to prevent the bracelet from putting him to sleep at the end of the time limit, an action that ultimately ends the Final Killing Game and allows his friend to live. As for his notable abilities, his title of Ultimate Boxer is well-earned; he is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant capable of taking down multiple opponents with his fists and is known for mocking those who resort to using weapons against him. He typically fights with a southpaw stance. However, his effectiveness varies, as his power is noted to be less than that of the strongest fighters in the series, and the restrictions of the Killing Game showcase his resourcefulness in overcoming his limitations.
