Description
AR-D, whose full designation stands for Absolute Refusal Defended Type, is an artificial being and one of the puppets created by the scientist Ernesta Kühne. He is introduced as a combatant in the Phoenix Festa tournament, where he partners with his counterpart, RM-C, representing Allekant Academy. His name and acronym reflect his primary combat function as a defensive unit.

In terms of personality, AR-D possesses a voice that is blunt and haughty, which is notably unlike a typical machine. He displays a strong sense of arrogance, often telling his opponents that they will serve merely as stepping stones to prove his capabilities and even offering them a free minute to attack without retaliation. Despite this bravado, he is also shown to be somewhat dim-witted and comical, with an eagerness to please his master that frequently irritates his partner, RM-C. He has a strong sense of pride tied to his creator, refusing to take back anything he says for fear of dirtying his master's name. His motivations are centered on fulfilling his function as a puppet, proving the superiority of his design, and gaining the approval of his creators, Ernesta Kühne and Camilla Pareto.

AR-D serves as a secondary antagonist and a significant obstacle in the story, specifically during the Phoenix Festa arc. He and RM-C face the protagonists Ayato Amagiri and Julis Riessfeld in the final round of the tournament. His role is to be a powerful and adaptive enemy who forces the main characters to evolve their strategies.

His key relationship is with his partner and fellow puppet, RM-C. Their dynamic is one of contrast, with RM-C often acting as the straight-laced, irritable foil to AR-D's more boastful and eager personality. Tactically, they are a formidable team, with RM-C able to shed her own Lux attachments and combine with AR-D, transferring her armor and flight unit to greatly increase his power and offensive capabilities. This combination is a defining element of his role in the story's climax.

AR-D shows notable development over the course of his battles. While initially dismissive of his opponents, following his fight against Saya Sasamiya and Kirin Toudou, he begins to develop a sense of respect for worthy adversaries. In a symbolic gesture of this newfound respect, he chooses to keep a scar on his head inflicted by Kirin's blade. This represents a departure from a purely logical machine mindset to one that values honor and combat experience.

His most notable ability is the Defense Barrier, where he projects powerful walls of light capable of blocking extremely destructive attacks. It is theorized that this is an application of the same barrier technology used to protect crowds during matches. He can project this barrier to protect himself or, to a lesser extent, RM-C. After combining with RM-C, he can create multiple barriers at once, and can even compress them to form a Defense Barrier Sphere. This sphere, which he fills with energy before releasing, is powerful enough to destroy the Sirius Dome stage. For offense, AR-D wields a giant hammer Lux called the Wolnir Hammer, which is as tall as he is. He can launch the head of the hammer at his opponents, and after combining with RM-C, he is able to launch it multiple times in succession. His combat ability is further enhanced by a capacity to learn and adapt to his opponents' tactics during a fight, demonstrating rapid evolution.
