Description
Mifuyu Azusa is a veteran magical girl from Kamihama City who has been fighting witches for many years. She first met Yachiyo Nanami while defeating a witch, and the two became close partners, living together at Mikazuki Villa for seven years. Her magical powers gradually began to weaken, a development that deeply troubled her.
Personality-wise, Mifuyu is kind, gentle, and often acts as a sisterly figure to younger magical girls, though she struggles with everyday chores and prefers having others take care of her. She is reserved and sometimes too trusting or idealistic, which can lead her to make poor decisions. Her spirit is described as weak, making her susceptible to manipulation and despair when faced with harsh truths.
Mifuyu’s primary motivation is her desire for happiness and security. After realizing that magical girls inevitably become witches, she suffered a mental breakdown. Seeking a solution, she joined the Wings of Magius, an organization that promised to save magical girls from this fate. She became a high-ranking commander within the Magius, responsible for recruiting and guiding new members—known as black and white feathers—and protecting them when necessary. Despite feelings of guilt, she remained with the organization hoping to save herself and Yachiyo.
In the story, Mifuyu initially appears as an antagonist or obstacle, particularly to Iroha Tamaki’s search for her sister. Over time, however, she recognizes the ruthlessness of the Magius’s plan, including the use of the Doppel system and the creation of Rumors to harvest emotional energy. This leads to her defection and a redemption arc in which she seeks atonement and reunites with Yachiyo. Her role shifts from opposition to ally, helping Iroha and others understand the truth and eventually contributing to the final battle against the Grief Tree.
Key relationships define Mifuyu’s journey. Her bond with Yachiyo Nanami is the emotional heart of her character; the two share a deep mutual affection and a long history as partners, though their ideological rift drives them apart before reconciliation. Within the Magius, she acts as a mentor to Momoko Togame, teaching her recruitment tactics. She also collaborates with Touka and Nemu, the other leaders of the organization, but her doubts about their methods grow over time. Her interactions with Iroha Tamaki evolve from conflict to cooperation.
Developmentally, Mifuyu begins as a loyal partner, breaks down under existential horror, turns to a radical group, but ultimately confronts her mistakes and works to make amends. Her arc highlights themes of guilt, redemption, and the struggle between idealism and practicality.
As for abilities, Mifuyu wields a pendulum as her weapon, which she uses to create illusions and disorient opponents in combat, often relying on psychological manipulation. Some sources also mention a chakram. Her magical skill set includes hypnotic effects. When pushed to her limits, she releases a Doppel in place of transforming into a witch—her Doppel takes the form of sugar geese. Her soul gem is located on her left hand. Her original wish, made before becoming a magical girl, was to help her family’s traditional Japanese inn succeed, reflecting her supportive and gentle nature before the trauma of her experiences took hold.
