Description
Chikara Ennoshita is a second-year student at Karasuno High School and a member of the boys' volleyball club, where he plays as a wing spiker and wears the jersey number 6. He has a plain and unassuming appearance with medium-length dark brown hair parted near the middle and slightly down-turned eyes that give him a sleepy or tired look even when he is excited. His physical stats include a height of 175.4 centimeters and a weight of 66.4 kilograms, with a spike reach of 305 centimeters.

Ennoshita has a calm, quiet, and reserved personality. He often has a gentle, smiling expression, similar to the third-year setter Koshi Sugawara, and acts as a sensible, patient, and reliable presence on the team. Despite his usually mild demeanor, he can behave boldly and be surprisingly sharp-tongued or strict when the situation calls for it. This firmness allows him to effectively manage and control his more energetic and troublesome second-year teammates, Ryunosuke Tanaka and Yu Nishinoya, who are often described as a runaway duo. He is known for being intelligent, possessing excellent observational skills, and having never received a failing grade on an exam.

A key aspect of Ennoshita's background is that he briefly quit the volleyball club during his first year. When the legendary former coach Ikkei Ukai returned to lead the team, his training methods became much more grueling and focused solely on winning. Unable to keep up and no longer finding the club enjoyable, Ennoshita, along with his fellow second-years Hisashi Kinoshita and Kazuhito Narita, began skipping practice and eventually left. However, he soon realized that not playing volleyball was more painful than the difficult training, and the three returned to the team. By the time they came back, Coach Ukai had been hospitalized again. This experience left Ennoshita with a lasting sense of guilt for having run away, leading him and his friends to refer to themselves as the ungrateful second years. This regret is a core part of his character and a source of his initial lack of confidence, as he feels his past actions make him unworthy of being a leader.

Ennoshita's primary motivation is to support the team from both on and off the court and to prove his value as a player, driven by his past failure to commit. As a reserve player who most often cheers from the bench, he is determined to be ready whenever he is called upon. His personal struggle revolves around overcoming his low self-esteem and living up to the expectations of being the natural candidate to become the next team captain, a role for which his steady and perceptive nature makes him well-suited.

In the story, Ennoshita serves as a stabilizing presence and a strategic asset for Karasuno. His most significant role occurs during the Spring High Preliminary arc in the match against Wakutani Minami High School. When captain Daichi Sawamura is injured and must leave the game, Ennoshita is subbed in as his replacement. Initially, he is overwhelmed by the pressure and tries to imitate Daichi's leadership style. Encouraged by Tanaka to just be himself, he finds his own way to contribute. Remembering his past regrets, he shakes off his hesitation, yells defiantly at the opposing team, and begins to play with confidence. He successfully formulates a strategy and makes several crucial receives, helping Karasuno win the match. After the game, Daichi chooses not to return to the court to allow Ennoshita to continue playing in his place, a sign of the captain's trust in him. He also demonstrates his strong sense of responsibility when he steps in front of Coach Ukai to defend first-year Tadashi Yamaguchi after a failed serve, stating from his own experience that running away is much more painful.

Ennoshita has several key relationships within the team. He is closest to Kinoshita and Narita, the two other second-years who share his history of leaving and returning to the club. He acts as a pillar of support for the first-years, such as giving Tobio Kageyama tactical advice when he was struggling during a match and helping to diffuse tension between Kageyama and Kei Tsukishima. He also helps the team's energetic aces, Asahi Azumane and Nishinoya, after they return to the club, a role that forces him to step up and become more involved. He is considered so reliable that Daichi entrusts him with keeping the team in order when he is absent.

Ennoshita's abilities are not flashy, but they are stable and well-rounded. He is a reliable receiver and rarely makes mistakes, a trait noted by Aoba Johsai's captain Toru Oikawa. His greatest strengths are his intelligence, court sense, and ability to analyze situations and players, which allows him to give accurate advice and devise strategies during matches. He may not have the raw power or speed of other players; however, his calm judgment, defensive consistency, and leadership potential make him an invaluable asset both on the court and from the bench. After graduating from high school, he goes on to become a physical therapist, continuing to support athletes in a different capacity.
