TV-Series
Description
Airi Yūnami serves as a regional management officer for the South Kanto Bay Defense Organization, a position that places her in charge of overseeing the defense affairs for the prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba. Within this administrative and military hierarchy, she works alongside her colleague Gutoku Asanagi, and together they are responsible for managing the teenage fighters known as the Tri-City heads and sub-heads who defend humanity from the enigmatic alien creatures called the Unknown.

In terms of personality, Airi stands in contrast to Gutoku’s stricter, more commander-like demeanor. She is characterized by a gentle, forbearing, and nurturing nature, often acting as a motherly figure to the students under her command. Unlike the more rigid approach of her partner, she is consistently concerned with the well-being and safety of the young fighters, and she naturally assumes a supportive role in battle rather than a front-line command position. This caring disposition makes her a beloved presence among the students, who see her as a source of warmth and stability.

However, a deeper and more complex layer to Airi’s character is revealed as the narrative progresses. She is not human but is in fact an extradimensional alien, one of the Unknown, initially masquerading in a human form. At the beginning of her time among humans, she viewed the children merely as tools for an unknown purpose. This perspective undergoes a profound transformation over the course of her life. She begins to develop genuine affection for the children, eventually coming to consider them as her own family. Her motivations shift from her original, hidden agenda to a sincere desire to protect the future of these young people. This change is further emphasized by her deep, romantic relationship with Gutoku Asanagi, a human who chose to join her side out of love. Her most personal and poignant motivation becomes her wish to have a child of her own with Gutoku, a desire that is ultimately impossible due to her nature as an alien being.

Airi’s role in the story is multifaceted. On the surface, she is a benign and supportive authority figure, but she is also the gatekeeper of a dimensional gate, a secret tied directly to her true nature as an Unknown. Her key relationships are central to the plot’s development. Her bond with Gutoku Asanagi is a tragic romance; he falls in love with her and abandons his humanity to be with her, hoping to escape the war, though her duties make that impossible. Her relationship with the students, particularly with Maihime Tenkawa of Kanagawa, is deeply maternal. A flashback reveals a conversation where Airi expressed her wish to experience having a baby and dying a satisfying death, a moment that later haunts Maihime. Airi also shares a significant connection with Aoi Yaegaki, a young girl whom she and Gutoku raised as their own child, viewing her as a daughter figure even though she is not biologically related to them.

The character’s development arc is one of the most dramatic in the series, moving from hidden antagonist to tragic figure. Her initial indifference to humanity gives way to genuine love and a desire for family, making her eventual fate all the more sorrowful. In the final confrontation, she is forced to fight against Maihime and Hotaru Rindou in her true, powerful Unknown form. Despite her strength, she is ultimately defeated and impaled by Maihime, leading to her death. In her final moments, she disintegrates, leaving behind only a pocket watch as a token of her human guise. Even after death, her spirit appears one last time to Gutoku, asking him to live on and take care of Aoi Yaegaki, ensuring that the family she created in her heart would not be completely lost.

As for notable abilities, Airi is a formidable combatant, especially when revealed in her true Unknown form, which is described as likely the strongest opponent the protagonists have ever faced. Her very body is intrinsically linked to a massive tower called Leviathan, which serves as her physical form and houses a dimensional gate. In this state, she possesses immense strength and durability, capable of overwhelming the top fighters of the Tri-Cities simultaneously. Prior to this revelation, in her human guise, her abilities were less defined, primarily focused on administration, support, and caring for the young soldiers, though she demonstrated enough capability to venture into battlefields. Her most significant ability, however, may be the power to revive the dead, as she resurrects Gutoku Asanagi after impaling him, transforming him into a half-Unknown being in the process.
