Description
Kennosuke Tokisada Ouma is a young man originally from the early Warring States period of Japan, a time roughly 450 years prior to the main events of his story. His given name is Tokisada, while Kennosuke is his common name. He is a samurai of the Washiba clan, having served the clan's princess, Yukihime, with absolute loyalty. Due to his extensive experience on countless battlefields from a young age, his body is marked with many scars, a testament to his life as a warrior. He is physically strong, possesses considerable muscle mass, and is proficient in hand-to-hand combat.

Upon awakening in the present day from a long period of suspended animation inside a mysterious cube-shaped artifact, Kennosuke is confronted with a world that is entirely alien to him. His personality is initially characterized by his blunt, hot-headed, and stubborn nature. As a man of the past, he struggles to adapt to modern culture and technology, often leading to moments of confusion. He speaks in the formal, direct tone of a samurai, which often makes him stand out. Despite his rough exterior and initial rebelliousness, he shows an oddly cute and earnest side as he gradually becomes accustomed to his new surroundings. He is a fast learner, quickly picking up new skills and knowledge. For instance, despite his temporal displacement, he rapidly becomes proficient in English. He also develops a particular fondness for modern curry, which becomes his favorite food, and he is also an excellent cook.

Kennosuke's primary motivation is to fulfill his duty as a samurai and exact revenge on the beings he calls oni, which are in fact an extraterrestrial force known as Efi Dorg. In his own time, he fought these invaders to protect his princess, Yukihime. After awakening, he continues this fight, driven by a deep-seated desire for vengeance against the enemies who destroyed his lord's house. He also carries a significant amount of guilt, believing himself to be the sole survivor of the Washiba clan. While he feels a strong sense of responsibility towards the modern-day girl Yukina Shirahane, whom he initially confuses with his princess due to their resemblance, he is careful not to force his mission upon her, stating that he would like her to help him but would never compel her to do so.

In the story, Kennosuke serves as the designated pilot of a powerful humanoid mecha known as the Black Relic, or Kuromukuro. This mecha is actually a captured Efi Dorg unit, and he is the only person who can operate it. Due to an accident, Yukina becomes biometrically synchronized with the mecha and serves as his necessary navigator, making them combat partners. Kennosuke's role places him as a central figure in the defense against the alien invasion, making him a valuable asset to the United Nations research facility studying the artifacts.

His most significant relationship is with Yukina Shirahane. He initially sees her as a replacement for his lost princess and calls her by that title, but he soon realizes she is a different person and begins to call her by her name. Their relationship evolves from one of obligation to a genuine partnership and deep bond. He also has complex ties to his past, particularly his memory of Princess Yukihime, whose fate haunts him. His key relationships extend to the other personnel at the UN laboratory, who help him adjust to modern life, as well as his alien adversaries. Later in the story, he even forms a temporary and uneasy alliance with one of the oni, Zer, against a common enemy.

Throughout the narrative, Kennosuke undergoes considerable development. He begins as a man lost in time, driven only by revenge and bound to the code of a past era. As he interacts with Yukina and the modern world, he starts to question his purpose. He suffers a near-fatal wound in battle but shows an amazing ability to recover. A major turning point occurs when he accepts that Princess Yukihime and the look-alike Muetta are separate individuals, allowing him to grow past his obsession with the past. He experiences significant mental and emotional growth, maturing as he contemplates his future and makes difficult decisions, such as planning to leave Earth to honor a promise to an enemy.

Kennosuke possesses several notable abilities derived from his origins. As a samurai, he is a highly skilled warrior with formidable muscle strength and proficiency in swordsmanship. He can fight effectively even outside of his mecha. The nanomachines injected into him when he became the pilot of his geoframe grant him regenerative capabilities, an accelerated healing factor, and effective immortality, meaning he does not age as long as his brain remains active. These nanomachines are the source of his remarkable recovery from mortal wounds. His piloting ability is also exceptional, allowing him to achieve consecutive victories in the Kuromukuro against technologically advanced alien foes.
