Description
Majin Buu is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball franchise who appears in Dragon Ball Super. In terms of background, Buu is not a created being but an ancient, primordial entity who has existed since time immemorial, long before the events of the main story. He was originally a purely destructive force who cycled between rampages and long hibernation. The evil wizard Bibidi discovered the means to awaken him from his slumber and used him as a weapon. During a reign of terror millions of years ago, Buu killed several of the Supreme Kais and absorbed two others: the South Supreme Kai and the Grand Supreme Kai. Absorbing the kind-hearted and rotund Grand Supreme Kai had a profound effect, giving Buu a childlike, innocent personality and a craving for sweets while dulling his ferocious nature. This is the form of Buu that is eventually sealed away and later unleashed on Earth.

The personality of Majin Buu is complex and depends heavily on his current form, but by the time of Dragon Ball Super, he exists as the so-called "Good Buu" or "Mr. Buu." In this state, he is generally innocent, naive, and childlike, with a short attention span and a constant desire for food, especially pudding and other sweets. He is prone to tantrums when hungry or frustrated, but he is not inherently malicious. Buu has learned the value of friendship and living peacefully, largely due to his bond with the human champion Mr. Satan. However, he can still be dangerous when angered, displaying a ruthless temper. He possesses a simplistic worldview, sometimes struggling to grasp complex concepts but showing surprising cleverness in combat.

Buu's primary motivation in Dragon Ball Super is largely centered on simple, immediate desires such as eating, sleeping, and protecting his home and friends. Unlike his previous incarnations, he does not seek universal domination or random destruction. He is a resident of Earth who lives at Mr. Satan's mansion and considers the planet his home. When a threat arises, his motivation shifts to self-defense and protecting those he cares about, including Mr. Satan and his pet dog, Bee. On one occasion, he is motivated to compete in the Tournament of Power, though he ultimately cannot participate. Later, he is driven to help stop the planet-eating villain Moro, not out of a grand heroic ideal, but because Moro's actions directly threaten his peaceful existence.

In the story of Dragon Ball Super, Majin Buu plays a supporting role as a powerful ally to the Z-Fighters. While he originally intended to represent Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power, he unfortunately falls into a deep, months-long hibernation just before the event, forcing Goku to recruit Frieza as his replacement. Buu has a much more significant role in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, where the wizard Moro is released. The Galactic Patrol believes that the only way to stop Moro is to restore the Grand Supreme Kai, whose essence still resides within Buu. Through a special hypnosis and aromatherapy process, the personality of the Grand Supreme Kai is awakened within Buu's body. This allows the Grand Supreme Kai to temporarily take control, using his godly power to combat Moro's magic and aid the other warriors.

Key relationships define Buu's role in the series. His most important relationship is with Mr. Satan, who is his best and truest friend. Satan taught Buu the difference between right and wrong and integrated him into human society. Buu is fiercely protective of Satan and deeply trusts him. He has a friendly but distant relationship with the other Z-Fighters like Goku and Vegeta, who treat him as a powerful but unpredictable ally. He retains a specific, instinctive rivalry with Vegeta, a remnant of their intense battles in the past.

Majin Buu shows development from his first appearance to his role in Dragon Ball Super. In Dragon Ball Z, he begins as a purely evil being, splits into good and evil halves, and eventually has his evil original form, Kid Buu, destroyed. The remaining Good Buu, now called Mr. Buu, continues to live on Earth. In Super, he has fully settled into this peaceful existence, showing no desire to revert to his old ways. The awakening of the Grand Supreme Kai within him represents a unique development, as it does not change Buu's core personality but allows him to access a separate, wiser, and more powerful persona when needed. This shows that Buu has integrated his past, using the power of the being he absorbed for good rather than being controlled by him.

Notable abilities make Majin Buu one of the most formidable beings in the universe. His most famous power is his near-invincible regeneration; he can recover from being blown into pieces or reduced to vapor, as long as a single cell remains. He can also absorb other lifeforms, enveloping them with his amorphous, gooey body to incorporate them into himself, gaining their power, knowledge, and techniques. His body is incredibly malleable, allowing him to stretch his limbs, change his shape, and create holes in his body to evade attacks. Buu can use the Transfiguration Beam, a magical ray fired from his antenna that can turn anyone or anything into inanimate objects, most commonly food like chocolate or eggs. He possesses immense superhuman strength, speed, and durability, and can fly and manipulate ki energy. He can heal the wounds of others simply by touching them and can mimic any technique after seeing it just once, including the Kamehameha. After the Grand Supreme Kai's personality is awakened, Buu gains access to godly ki and the abilities of a Supreme Kai, such as the power to create and perform the Kai Kai teleportation technique.
