Description
Gregory is a small, insect-like being known as a Sprite, often mistaken for a cricket or grasshopper, who serves as the butler and personal assistant to the North Kaio, also known as King Kai. Residing on King Kai's small planet, this diminutive creature is distinguished by his ability to speak and his diligent, if sometimes overbearing, dedication to his master.
Gregory is characterized by a respectful and polite demeanor, particularly when in the presence of King Kai, for whom he holds the highest regard. However, this respect can transform into an arrogant and irritating boastfulness when he speaks of the North Kaio's abilities, often exaggerating his master's power to defend his honor, even if such defense is ineffective. Despite his small stature, he possesses a degree of arrogance, showing little respect for those he deems inferior. This personality trait is most evident in his early interactions with Goku, with whom he has a strained relationship due to the Saiyan's casual treatment of his master.
Within the story, Gregory serves a functional role as a training obstacle for those who come to King Kai's planet to learn. The traditional regimen requires a student to first catch Bubbles, the king's monkey, and then successfully strike Gregory with a heavy hammer, a task that highlights his remarkable speed and agility. His swiftness is his primary notable ability, complemented by the power of flight. One piece of supplementary material assigns him a power level of 1003.
Gregory is a figure whose existence bridges different iterations of the Dragon Ball story. Originally created as an exclusive character for the anime adaptation, he did not appear in the original manga by Akira Toriyama. However, with the arrival of Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super, he was integrated into the main continuity of the animated series. His status as an anime-original character was later acknowledged by Toyotaro, the illustrator of the Dragon Ball Super manga, who produced artwork of Gregory and humorously suggested he might be hiding somewhere in the manga's version of the planet.
Key moments in Gregory's history are tied to major events. He was killed alongside King Kai and Bubbles when the bio-android Cell self-destructed on the planet. In Dragon Ball Super, following the defeat of Goku Black, Goku asks the Eternal Dragon Shenron to revive Gregory along with King Kai and Bubbles, a wish that is ultimately unsuccessful. Despite this, he continues to appear on King Kai's planet, assisting his master and often finding himself the victim of Goku's chaotic visits and gravity-defying crashes into the small home there. Through these consistent appearances, Gregory has become a small but memorable fixture in the universe.
