Description
Magetta, also known as Auta Magetta, is a warrior from Universe 6 and a member of the Metalman race, a species of inorganic, sentient beings that also exists in Universe 7. Despite his appearance, which strongly resembles a large, clunky robot, he is a living alien with a body composed of durable metal. His design is characterized by a bronze and silver chassis, flat purple feet, a pair of glowing oval eyes, and two transparent reactor cores in his chest that reveal the molten lava churning within his body. A distinctive smokestack rests on top of his head, which vents steam in response to his emotional or physical state, particularly when he is tense or exerting himself.
In terms of personality, Magetta is a being of stark contrasts. He is confident in his immense physical power and tactical ability, as demonstrated when he intelligently used an arena barrier to trap his opponent and raise the ambient temperature to gain an advantage. However, his most defining trait is an extreme and crippling emotional fragility. As is common among his race, Magetta is highly sensitive to insults and derogatory language. Being called a piece of junk or scrap metal is enough to instantly destroy his will to fight, causing him to lose focus, break down, and even cry. This psychological weakness is so profound that it consistently overrides his physical resilience in battle. He communicates in simple, mechanical vocalizations, such as choo-po, but possesses the intelligence to understand complex speech and even pass a written examination to qualify for competition, albeit with a barely passing score.
Magetta is chosen by the Universe 6 God of Destruction, Champa, to represent his team in the Tournament of Destroyers against Universe 7. His primary motivation in these tournaments is to serve his universe and his team, and he fights with a straightforward, heavy-hitting style to overpower his opponents. His most significant role in the story comes through his battles with Vegeta. In their first encounter, Magetta’s incredible durability and lava-based attacks force Vegeta to transform into a Super Saiyan and ultimately resort to psychological warfare. Vegeta secures victory not by overpowering the Metalman, but by shouting an insult, causing Magetta to lose the will to fight and fall from the ring. This establishes a recurring pattern for the character.
Magetta’s most important relationship is with his Universe 6 teammate, Botamo, a large, bear-like warrior. The two form a close and effective partnership based on mutual reliance. After his humiliating defeat to Vegeta, Botamo is seen comforting the distraught Magetta. This camaraderie develops into a coordinated fighting strategy called Bota Magetta. Understanding his weakness, Botamo sits on Magetta's shoulders and covers his ears, blocking out any verbal insults from opponents. In this formation, Botamo’s damage-defensive ability protects him from attacks while Magetta’s immense strength and durability form the core of their offense.
Throughout the Tournament of Power arc, Magetta shows a degree of development, primarily through his team-up with Botamo to circumvent his critical weakness. He demonstrates his capability by temporarily holding his own against powerful opponents like Toppo from Universe 11. However, his progress is cut short when the fused warrior Kefla unleashes a massive energy blast that separates the pair, leaving Magetta vulnerable once again. He is ultimately eliminated after Vegeta destroys the lava-formed earplugs he had made for himself and delivers another well-placed insult.
Magetta possesses a range of notable abilities that make him a formidable close-quarters combatant. His primary asset is his body of solid metal, which grants him extreme durability and immense physical strength. He weighs over one thousand tons, making him nearly impossible to lift or move against his will. He has no ability to fly, a weakness that his teammates try to compensate for by modifying arena rules. Offensively, Magetta generates and controls powerful magma within his body. He can spit this lava as a projectile attack that is potent enough to counter energy blasts like Vegeta’s Galick Gun. He can also use his internal heat to drastically raise the temperature of the surrounding area, and can solidify his spit lava into a hardened stone club to use as a melee weapon. Another of his techniques involves spinning his body at high speeds to attack like a tornado, compensating for his otherwise slow mobility. Despite being forced into a defensive role by his psychological frailty, Magetta is never physically harmed in any of his on-screen battles, with all his defeats stemming from his inability to handle verbal abuse.
