Description
Jirobay, known as Yajirobe in the original version, is a supporting character who appears in the Dragon Ball Super anime. He is an Earthling and a ronin, a masterless samurai, who is recognized for his rotund appearance, unkempt long black hair, and traditional brown and black striped robes. Despite his heavy-set frame and a general aversion to conflict, Jirobay is a surprisingly capable and swift fighter, displaying significant skill with the katana he carries.

His personality is characterized by a combination of laziness, cowardice, and gluttony, with a particular fondness for eating large meals, fishing, hunting, and taking afternoon naps. He often comes across as rude and anti-social, primarily looking out for his own interests, yet he can be amicable with those he knows well, such as his longtime companion Balzar, known as Korin in most versions. His love of food is a primary motivation, comparable to that of Goku, and he is willing to go to great lengths to obtain a meal.

In Dragon Ball Super, Jirobay's role is minor, with his appearances being sporadic. He continues to reside at the top of Balzar's Tower, where he lives with the guardian cat, Balzar. His primary function within the story remains as a support figure, mainly helping to cultivate and deliver Senzu Beans, the magical healing item, to the main fighters when needed. One notable moment in the series involves Goku teleporting to the tower to request Senzu Beans for Future Trunks, where he finds Jirobay and Balzar playing a game. While the present timeline Jirobay sees little action, an alternate future version of the character plays a more critical role. In the future timeline ravaged by the villain Goku Black, this Jirobay is part of the resistance, and he is shown saving Future Trunks and Goku when they are wounded by their enemies.

His key relationship is with Balzar, with whom he lives and spends most of his time. He has known Goku since the original Dragon Ball series, and they share a mutual respect, though Jirobay is often left behind as the Saiyans and other warriors grow exponentially stronger. Development for Jirobay in Dragon Ball Super is almost nonexistent. He persists in his comfortable, lazy lifestyle, avoiding fights and showing little interest in training or becoming more powerful, which is a continuation of his behavior from Dragon Ball Z. His voice actor has even commented that the character barely appeared in the series, expressing a wish for a more important role in the future.

Regarding his abilities, while he rarely demonstrates them in Dragon Ball Super, his latent strength is considerable for an Earthling. Despite his obesity and cowardly nature, he is deceptively fast and a highly skilled swordsman, capable of cutting with great precision. His history shows he was once able to fight on par with a younger Goku and even cut off the tail of the Saiyan Vegeta during a critical moment in the past, proving his potential when he can overcome his fear.
