Description
Android 18, originally a human named Lazuli, is a character who appears in Dragon Ball Super. Along with her twin brother, Lapis, she was kidnapped as a delinquent youth by the scientist Dr. Gero and unwillingly transformed into a cyborg. This process augmented her on a cellular level, granting her immense power, a perpetual energy reactor that provides infinite stamina, and a greatly slowed aging process. Unlike fully mechanical androids, her organic components allow her to train, grow stronger, and even reproduce, as she later gives birth to a daughter, Marron. Her only mechanical parts are her emergency deactivation controller, a removed self-destruction device, and the energy reactor.

By the time of Dragon Ball Super, Android 18 has undergone a significant shift from her initial cold and withdrawn demeanor. While she retains a core of coolness, practicality, and sarcastic wit, she has grown noticeably kinder, more compassionate, and more socially integrated. She is often seen smiling, especially around her family, and participates in group activities like a bingo tournament. Her motivations are deeply rooted in her personal relationships. She is fiercely devoted to her husband, Krillin, and their daughter, Marron, and her actions are frequently driven by a desire to provide for and protect them. This is evident when she considers using the Dragon Balls to wish for the perfect gift for Krillin, only to realize through a conversation with Bulma that she and Marron are all he truly needs. Her love for her family becomes a tangible source of strength, even powering her up in critical battles.

Android 18 plays a crucial role in the Universe Survival Saga, where she is recruited to represent Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power. Initially motivated by money, she eventually joins after sensing from Goku, Gohan, and the escalating prize money that the stakes of the tournament are far more severe than a simple competition. In this tournament, she is a key strategic asset, not just for her power but for her tactical intelligence and unique abilities. Her infinite stamina allows her to outlast opponents who rely on finite energy reserves. She demonstrates advanced energy conservation methods, using precise strikes and defensive barriers rather than wasteful displays of power.

Her key relationships are central to her character in Dragon Ball Super. Her bond with Krillin is one of deep, supportive love. She is an emotionally supportive wife, offering him kind words and wisdom during his moments of self-doubt, and she worries about his safety in his job as a police officer. The couple works well together, both in combat and leisure, and she is shown to have a playful, if occasionally jealous, dynamic with him. Her relationship with her brother, Android 17, is more complex. After years of separation, she is initially cold and distant toward him, warning him not to mispronounce her daughter's name. However, their deep-seated connection as twins becomes a cornerstone of Universe 7's strategy in the Tournament of Power. They work together with incredible synergy, coordinating attacks, covering for each other's defenses, and adapting their tactics fluidly. Despite their strained rapport, her deep care for him is revealed when she is visibly distraught after he sacrifices himself.

In terms of development, Android 18's evolution from a primary antagonist in Dragon Ball Z to a protective wife and mother in Dragon Ball Super is solidified. She has left her life of rebellion behind and embraced a settled, if still active, family life. The Tournament of Power serves as a major arena for her growth, showcasing not just her physical abilities but her strategic mind and emotional fortitude. She demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice herself for her brother and draws strength from the memory of her family to overcome powerful foes like Ribrianne.

Android 18 possesses several notable abilities stemming from her cyborg physiology. She has no traditional ki signature and thus cannot be sensed by other fighters, nor can she sense ki herself. Her infinite energy reactor grants her inexhaustible stamina, meaning her power does not drop from fatigue. She is a highly skilled martial artist and combatant capable of holding her own against Super Saiyan-level fighters. Her techniques include the Android Barrier, an energy-based forcefield used for defense. She also uses the Kienzan, a razor-sharp disc of energy capable of cutting through opponents much stronger than herself, a technique she learned from her husband, Krillin.
