Description
Tatsugorou is a human samurai hailing from the Mountain Nation on the Western Continent, renowned as a legendary mercenary swordsman whose exploits echo across both Western and Eastern Continents through bardic tales. His name commands instant recognition among practitioners of swordsmanship.

He cuts an imposing figure—large, burly, and rough-mannered, with prominent scars on his right forehead and left cheek. A thick beard frames his face, and his hair is tied in a heavy ponytail. His standard attire combines a skin-tight suit beneath a sleeveless kimono, reinforced by a breastplate, tare armor, and a jinbaori coat, with a katana at his waist. Adaptations diverge: the manga accentuates his ruggedness with detailed armor and a single katana, while the 2021 manga mirrors the anime’s streamlined design but retains the thick beard and solo blade. The anime simplifies his look—thinner hair, stubble, a plain kimono paired with a sleeveless haori and cloak, and dual swords (katana and wakizashi).

A decades-long patron of the Western Restaurant Nekoya, Tatsugorou frequents the establishment since the previous Master’s era, forming bonds with regulars Altorius and William Gold. His loyalty drives him to undertake a task for the current Master: returning Heinrich Seeleman’s forgotten sword. After delivering the blade, Tatsugorou reveals Nekoya’s existence and Saturday operations, securing Heinrich as a new customer.

His peerless swordsmanship underpins his continental fame, yet he strictly honors Nekoya’s conflict-free sanctuary. Inside, he indulges in fiery but good-natured clashes with Altorius, debating whether teriyaki (Tatsugorou’s favorite) surpasses pork loin cutlet (Altorius’s choice)—a rivalry born of mutual respect. He intervenes protectively when younger patrons like Sarah Gold or Heinrich quarrel, though these efforts often reignite his culinary feud with Altorius.

Notably, he seeks a ward to inherit Nekoya’s secret, ensuring he avoids the obscurity that befell older patrons. Bardic songs accurately depict his appearance, aiding recognition. Personality nuances shift across media: the manga presents him as wild, boisterous, and voracious, while the anime’s limited scenes render him more reserved. His preferred dish is traditional Japanese teriyaki—distinct from Western yōshoku—served with white rice instead of his homeland’s brown rice. He adapts his drinks to company: alcohol with peers like Altorius, or non-alcoholic green tea with younger guests to prevent inebriation.

His narrative prominence surges in Season 2, Episode 22 ("Teriyaki Burger"), where his signature teriyaki takes center stage—a contrast to earlier anime episodes prioritizing other characters’ orders.
