Description
Champa is the God of Destruction for Universe 6 and the twin brother of Beerus, the God of Destruction for Universe 7. He is a corpulent, anthropomorphic feline with purple fur and large, pointed ears, resembling his brother but with a noticeably heavier frame and a lighter skin tone. His appearance is that of a large, cat-like being, typically adorned in attire befitting his divine status, which includes dark and red garments. His name is a pun on the alcoholic beverage Champagne, following a naming theme shared with his brother and their angel attendants.
Personality-wise, Champa is a complex mix of divine authority and childish petulance. He is extremely confident in his own power and, like his brother, can be indifferent to the destruction and loss of life he causes. However, he is frequently depicted as lazy, selfish, and prone to throwing tantrums, especially when he does not get his way. He is a sore loser; during the Tournament of Destroyers, he accused his opponents of cheating and rolled on the floor crying after a loss. Champa is also underhanded, showing little regard for rules or order when they inconvenience him. He secretly entered Universe 7 to steal Super Dragon Balls and attempted to rig his own tournament by modifying the environment to favor his team. Despite these flaws, he is capable of showing genuine respect for his warriors, as seen when he proudly reassured Hit that he fought well after a devastating loss, rather than reacting with his typical anger. His driving motivation is largely rooted in his intense, petty rivalry with his brother Beerus. This rivalry long ago escalated into a universe-threatening fight that destroyed countless planets, forcing their angel attendants, Whis and Vados, to intervene. To prevent further cosmic destruction, the brothers agreed to settle their differences through "food showdowns" rather than direct combat. Champa has a strong craving for delicious food and sweet drinks, which is implied to be the reason for his larger physique. His desire to obtain Universe 7's Earth, which is rich with culinary delights after Universe 6's Earth was ruined by war, is the primary catalyst for the Universe 6 Saga.
In the narrative, Champa first serves as an antagonist when he arrives in Universe 7 with his angel attendant, Vados, who is Whis's older sister. After a brief, explosive scuffle with Beerus, he proposes a martial arts tournament called the Tournament of Destroyers to decide the fate of Earth. He recruits five powerful warriors from his universe—including Frost, Hit, and Cabba—to fight against Universe 7's team. His role later expands during the Tournament of Power, where he must work alongside his brother and other gods to avoid the erasure of their universes. His key relationships are central to his character. His relationship with Beerus is defined by sibling rivalry, marked by constant bickering, one-upmanship, and childish competitions, though they show a glimmer of brotherly connection in moments of crisis. His dynamic with Vados mirrors that of Beerus and Whis; she acts as his martial arts teacher and attendant, often cleaning up his messes and making snide remarks about his behavior and weight, though he relies on her completely for her power and guidance.
Throughout the series, Champa shows a degree of development. Initially portrayed as a purely selfish and antagonistic force, he later demonstrates strategic thinking, ordering his team to change tactics in the Tournament of Power when he realizes direct confrontation is futile. He also shows genuine admiration for his fighters' efforts, and his final moments before erasure, where he shares a look with Beerus, hint at a deeper bond beneath the rivalry. As a God of Destruction, Champa possesses immense power. Trained by Vados, he is capable of destroying planets and even galaxies with ease. He can create and manipulate destructive energy, fire powerful energy blasts, and engage in combat at speeds faster than light. However, his power has limits. Vados states that his inferior physique makes him weaker than his brother Beerus. Furthermore, his overweight build contributes to lower stamina, causing him to tire more easily during prolonged fights than his leaner twin. Like all Gods of Destruction, his life is directly linked to that of his universe's Supreme Kai; if the Kaioshin of Universe 6 dies, Champa will die as well. He also harbors a deep, fearfully respectful attitude toward the Omni-King, Zen-Oh.
