Description
King Gurume is the primary antagonist of the 1986 film Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies. He is the monarch of the Land of Gurume, a territory plagued by environmental ruin and famine as a direct result of his rule. Prior to his transformation, he was a normal human, though one characterized by gluttony and greed. His physical condition drastically changed after discovering that the land beneath his kingdom was rich in a valuable resource known as Blood Rubies. As he began to mine these gems, his body grotesquely mutated into an obese, purple-skinned monster with mismatched eyes, driven by a ravenous and virtually unsatisfiable hunger. This hunger is not a mere desire for food but a painful, consuming affliction that dictates his every action.
Personality wise, King Gurume is defined by his selfishness and corruption. His rule is exploitative, as he orders the ruthless excavation of Blood Rubies without regard for the destruction of the environment or the suffering of his people. The farms and natural beauty of his land are ruined, and the populace lives in desperation. However, his villainy is tempered by a degree of tragedy. His monstrous behavior is a direct symptom of the curse placed upon him by the Blood Rubies, which mutated him and created his endless hunger. He is not an evil mastermind seeking power for its own sake, but rather a desperate tyrant in constant agony, seeking relief. His primary motivation is singular and visceral: to end the terrible hunger that plagues him. Concluding that no amount of food can cure his condition, he seeks the seven Dragon Balls, believing only the eternal dragon Shenron has the power to wish his hunger away.
In the story, King Gurume serves as the central obstacle for the protagonist Goku and his companion Bulma. At the outset of the film, he has already gathered four of the Dragon Balls. His chief underlings, Raven and Bongo, are dispatched to locate the remaining spheres, leading them to steal Goku's Four-Star Dragon Ball from his home. This act directly sets the plot in motion, causing Goku and Bulma to pursue the king's forces. Throughout the adventure, they meet Penny, a local girl seeking to overthrow the king and restore her homeland, solidifying Gurume as the target of the heroes' quest. His key relationships are primarily with his henchmen, Raven and Bongo, who execute his commands; and with the wider cast of heroes, who oppose his destructive methods.
King Gurume undergoes a significant transformation and development by the film's climax. After Goku and his allies confront him in his castle, he enters a second, even more massive and mindless rampage state. During the fight, it is revealed that he has swallowed several Dragon Balls. In a decisive moment, Bulma throws the final Dragon Ball into his mouth, allowing Shenron to be summoned from within the king's own stomach. Penny makes the wish not to cure the king, but to restore the land to its former peace and beauty. The Dragon's power removes the curse of the Blood Rubies from the earth, which in turn reverses the mutation on the king. He is reverted to his original, though still unattractive, human form. In the final scene, he declares himself still hungry, only to be handed a simple apple by Penny. The king is shocked by the common fruit, symbolically indicating his curse is truly lifted and he can now find satisfaction in simple sustenance rather than the corrupted luxury he once craved, showing a moment of redemption as he expresses shame for his actions.
Regarding notable abilities, King Gurume does not display skilled martial arts or energy attacks like other Dragon Ball characters. His primary ability is his sheer physical resilience and strength in his transformed states. In his monstrous form, he is incredibly durable, capable of withstanding a direct Kamehameha wave from a young Goku with no visible damage. He also possesses immense strength, allowing him to rampage through his own castle and crush his subordinate Bongo simply by growing in size. His power is purely that of a brute-force monster, making him a formidable physical threat despite his lack of technique. His most unique "ability" is the condition of his body itself, as his stomach becomes the temporary container for the Dragon Balls at the story's resolution.
