Description
Mutenroshi, also known as Master Roshi, is the Turtle Hermit and a legendary martial arts master living in seclusion on a small island called Kame House. In the events of Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies, he is introduced when Goku, Bulma, and their companions seek his help in stopping King Gurumes. He is an elderly, bald man with a long white beard and mustache, usually seen wearing sunglasses, a straw hat, and a turtle shell on his back. His personality is a blend of eccentricity, perversion, and genuine wisdom. He is known for his lecherous tendencies, as demonstrated when he demands that Bulma show him her breasts in exchange for his Dragon Ball. However, he also possesses a sharp intellect and a deep understanding of human nature, using the Flying Nimbus Cloud to test the honesty of those who approach him. His motivations are largely self-centered; he values his peaceful lifestyle and his home. Yet when his island is attacked and his house destroyed by King Gurumes’ soldiers, he reacts with righteous anger, powering up and unleashing a powerful Kamehameha that destroys the enemy submarine. Despite this display of force, he declines Pansy’s request to directly confront the king, instead assuring her that Goku and Bulma are capable of handling the threat. This decision reflects both his confidence in the younger generation and his preference to remain in the background as a mentor rather than a direct combatant. His role in the story is that of a catalyst: he provides Goku with the Flying Nimbus, which only the pure of heart can ride, and he is implied to have taught Goku the Kamehameha technique, which Goku later attempts against Gurumes. Key relationships include his brief but impactful interactions with Goku, whom he recognizes as honest and promising, and with Bulma, whom he treats as an object of his desires. He also outwits Yamcha when the bandit tries to deceive him. Development in the film is limited; he remains largely unchanged, though his willingness to defend his home reveals a protective side that balances his otherwise comedic and self-indulgent nature. His notable abilities include the Kamehameha, a concentrated wave of energy strong enough to obliterate a naval submarine, superhuman strength and speed that allow him to move faster than the eye can see, and the power to summon the Flying Nimbus. He also demonstrates the ability to increase his muscular mass and power when angered, a state that amplifies his physical capabilities. Overall, Mutenroshi in this film serves as the archetypal wise old master, combining humor, perversion, and genuine martial prowess into a figure who both tests and aids the heroes on their journey.
