Description
Muten Roshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is an ancient and immensely powerful martial arts master who resides alone on a small island in a house called Kame House. In Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies, he is introduced as a legendary figure whom the young girl Pansy seeks out to help save her homeland from the tyrannical King Gurumes. Roshi appears as a bald, elderly man with a thick white beard and mustache, often wearing sunglasses, beach clothes or a martial arts uniform, and carrying a walking stick. Despite his frail appearance, he possesses tremendous strength and has lived for several centuries, having trained many of Earth’s greatest fighters, including Grandpa Son Gohan, the Ox King, and later Son Goku and his friends.

Roshi’s personality is a blend of profound wisdom and comical lecherousness. He is deeply knowledgeable about martial arts and the world, yet he often indulges in childish perversions, such as asking Bulma to show him her breasts in exchange for a Dragon Ball. This behavior provides lighthearted humor but does not diminish his underlying kindness and sense of responsibility. When his home is attacked by King Gurumes’s forces, Roshi reacts with genuine anger and demonstrates his true power by using the Kamehameha wave to destroy the submarine that bombed his island. However, instead of joining the heroes on their quest, he chooses to stay behind, expressing confidence that Goku and his companions are capable of handling the threat themselves. His motivation in the movie is not to seek personal glory or to fight directly, but to guide and evaluate the younger generation, particularly Goku, whom he tests with the Flying Nimbus cloud to determine his purity of heart.

His key relationships in the film are with Goku, Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Pansy. Roshi takes an immediate liking to Goku after seeing that the boy can ride the Nimbus, recognizing his pure-hearted nature and potential. He also interacts with Bulma in his typically flirtatious manner, though he ultimately respects her cleverness when she tricks him using Oolong’s shape-shifting ability. The film shows little development for Roshi himself, as he remains largely static, but his role is pivotal as the catalyst who sets Goku on the path of training. By the end of the movie, Goku decides to travel to Kame House to formally train under Roshi, signifying the master’s importance in launching Goku’s martial arts journey.

Notable abilities displayed in this film include the Kamehameha, a powerful energy wave that Roshi invented and which he uses to devastating effect against the submarine. He also demonstrates the ability to summon the Flying Nimbus cloud, a magical vehicle that only those with a pure heart can ride. Beyond these visible techniques, his mere reputation as the Turtle Hermit commands respect, and his combat experience is implied through his calm demeanor and the brief but decisive display of his strength. In terms of background, the film references that he is a hermit who has trained many strong students and that he possesses a Dragon Ball, which he willingly gives up after his initial lecherous demand is bypassed. Overall, Muten Roshi in Curse of the Blood Rubies serves as the wise but eccentric mentor figure who tests the heroes, showcases the pinnacle of Earth’s martial arts, and then entrusts the future to Goku and his friends.
