Description
King Goumesse, also referred to as King Gurumes, is a central character and the primary antagonist of Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies. He rules over his own territory, known as the Land of Gurumes, and was originally a normal human king. His background is defined by a tragic transformation triggered by his discovery of priceless Blood Rubies within the land's deposits. The discovery of these gems placed a curse upon him, causing him to mutate into a large, purple, and obese monster with an insatiable and painful hunger.
King Goumesse's personality is largely defined by this overwhelming curse. His actions become driven by a desperate need to satisfy his unending appetite, which fuels a deep-seated greed and corruption. He orders the continuous excavation of the Blood Rubies to fund the acquisition of the world's finest cuisines in a futile attempt to cure his constant hunger pangs. This relentless pursuit makes him a selfish tyrant, as his soldiers destroy the lands and homes of his own farmers in the search for more rubies.
The king's primary motivation throughout the story is to find a cure for his monstrous condition. He comes to believe that only the Eternal Dragon, Shenron, has the power to wish his eternal hunger away. To that end, he amasses the seven Dragon Balls, the primary goal of the film's heroes. By the time the story begins, King Goumesse has already collected four of them. He commands his two most esteemed henchmen, the powerful Bongo and the skilled Pasta, to locate the remaining Dragon Balls, leading them to steal Goku's Four-Star Ball.
In the film's climax, the heroes confront the king in his throne room. Upon their arrival, Goumesse transforms further, growing to an even more gigantic size and beginning a violent rampage. In this enlarged state, he demonstrates notable abilities, including immense strength capable of putting great pressure on Goku and a highly durable body that withstands a direct Kamehameha wave with little to no damage. During the battle, it is revealed that he has swallowed six of the Dragon Balls. Bulma defeats him by throwing the final Dragon Ball into his mouth. With all seven balls collected inside his stomach, Shenron is summoned, and a ray of light explodes from Goumesse's mouth, destroying the upper floors of his castle.
King Goumesse's key relationships are primarily with his subordinates, Bongo and Pasta, who serve as his top enforcers. The story does not explore any deeper personal connections. However, his character does undergo a significant development in the story's resolution. After the wish is made to restore the land, Shenron's power also reverses the curse on Goumesse, returning him to his human form. Though he comments that he is still hungry, his monstrous appetite is finally broken when a young girl from his ravaged kingdom, Pansy, offers him a simple apple, which he finds delicious. He expresses shame for his destructive actions, indicating a moment of redemption after his curse is lifted.
