Description
Panjee, also known as Pansy and in some early English versions as Penny, is a young girl who appears in the animated film Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies. She comes from a farming village within the kingdom ruled by King Gurumes and is a key figure in the film's storyline, since her determination to save her homeland sets the main adventure in motion.
Her background is shaped by the suffering of her people. The soldiers of King Gurumes, led by the enforcers Pasta and Bongo, have been destroying the homes and farmlands of villagers while searching for mystical Blood Rubies. These stones have placed a curse on the king, transforming him into a large purple monster with an insatiable hunger. When Bongo brutally beats her father for defending her, Panjee decides she can no longer stay idle and leaves her village to find outside help.
In personality, Panjee is rebellious, brave, compassionate, and resourceful. She refuses to accept the cruelty inflicted on her community and is willing to put herself in danger for the sake of others. Her primary motivation is to end the king's tyranny and restore peace and beauty to her land, which she loves deeply.
Her role in the story begins when she encounters Goku and Bulma while being harassed by the shape-shifting Oolong. Goku rescues her, and she joins their group. She shares the plight of her people with the others and explains her plan to seek the help of Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit. When the group arrives at Roshi's island, she asks him directly to help defeat King Gurumes, but he declines, assuring her that Goku and Bulma will be all the help she needs. She then travels with the group to the king's palace, where they confront the cursed ruler. At the climax of the film, the dragon Shenron emerges from the king's body and offers to grant one wish. Panjee wishes for her land to be peaceful and beautiful again, and Shenron answers by removing all the Blood Rubies and restoring the fertility of the land, breaking the curse and reducing the king to an ordinary small man. Her wish is the act that resolves the central conflict of the movie.
Her key relationships center on the people she wants to protect and the allies she gathers along the way. Her father's injury provides her initial motivation, and his suffering is what pushes her to act. She forms a close bond with Goku, who saves her from Oolong and fights on behalf of her cause, and with Bulma, who supports her during the journey. Her interaction with Master Roshi is brief but meaningful, as he redirects her toward the younger heroes. King Gurumes is her indirect antagonist, and although she never fights him directly, she works to undo the harm his curse has caused.
In terms of development, Panjee grows from a frightened girl whose family has been harmed into a decisive young person who takes responsibility for her homeland. Her defining moment comes with her selfless wish to Shenron, through which she prioritizes the welfare of her entire community over any personal desire. The same character is also shown as a supporting presence in the Dragon Ball Z: Summer Vacation Special.
Panjee has no combat abilities or supernatural powers. She is an ordinary human whose strengths lie in her courage, determination, and empathy. Her most notable contribution to the story is her ability to rally the heroes and, ultimately, her pivotal wish that ends the king's curse and heals the land.
