OVA
Description
Nora Polyansky is a 25-year-old Anti-United Nations variable fighter pilot who serves as one of the primary antagonists in the OVA series Macross Zero. Operating under the callsign Schwalbe Deux, she flies a distinctive wine-red SV-51γ variable fighter and acts as the wingman and partner of ace pilot D.D. Ivanov. Nora is introduced as a highly skilled and ruthless combatant, capable of single-handedly destroying an entire squadron of UN Spacy F-14 Tomcats, including the aircraft piloted by the protagonist Shin Kudo, during her first appearance. Her dedication to the Anti-UN cause stems from a deeply personal tragedy: United Nations forces killed her parents, raped her sister, and left her with a large physical scar across her chest, a wound that also manifests as a profound psychological scar. This traumatic past drives her relentless pursuit of victory over the UN and fuels her cold, merciless demeanor in battle.
Within the story, Nora serves as Shin Kudo’s chief rival, repeatedly engaging him in aerial combat both in the sky and on the ground. She is a formidable opponent, proficient not only in piloting but also in close-quarters combat, and she shows little hesitation in using lethal force. Her key relationship is with D.D. Ivanov, whom she follows loyally as his wingmate and whom some accounts describe as her lover. Together, they pose a significant threat to the UN forces and the protagonists. Nora’s character receives further development during a scene in which she interrogates Shin, revealing the brutal details of her family’s fate and the source of her hatred. Despite her skill and determination, she meets her end in the final episode when she is caught up in the catastrophic awakening of the Bird Human, the ancient alien bioweapon at the center of the conflict. Her notable abilities include exceptional aerial reflexes, tactical acumen, and a fierce will that makes her one of the most dangerous pilots in the Anti-UN ranks.
