OVA
Description
D.D. Ivanov is a fictional character who serves as a primary antagonist in the OVA series Macross Zero. A former pilot for the United Nations Spacy, Ivanov eventually defects to the Anti-United Nations Forces, becoming an ace pilot who leads a squadron of experimental SV-51 variable fighters. Before his defection, he held the position of chief test pilot for the VF series of variable fighters, and it is rumored that he took the VF-0’s development data with him when he switched sides. One of the most significant aspects of his past is his role as the flight instructor to the famous UN Spacy ace, Roy Focker.
In terms of personality, Ivanov is portrayed as a ruthless and calculating individual. Having grown disillusioned with the United Nations military during the Unification Wars, he shows little regard for human life, with the notable exception of his wingmate and lover, Nora Polyansky. Despite his grim demeanor, he carries the unusual nickname Daisy, which he adopted because of the yellow flower marking painted on his personal SV-51 fighter. His callsign is Schwalbe Un.
Ivanov’s primary motivation in the events of the story is to secure a mysterious alien artifact known as the AFOS, or Bird Human, which is discovered on the remote Mayan Island. The Anti-U.N. forces believe this artifact is linked to the Human Protoculture Intervention hypothesis, and Ivanov is deployed as part of a mission to retrieve it, using a Auerstädt submarine aircraft carrier as a staging ground. Throughout this operation, he repeatedly engages in dogfights with his former student, Roy Focker, treating him as a rookie despite Focker’s own legendary status. His role in the narrative is that of a formidable rival and a direct threat to the UN forces attempting to secure the artifact.
His key relationships are central to his character. The dynamic with Roy Focker is one of respect tinged with rivalry and past history, as Ivanov was once the mentor to the man who is now his primary opponent. The most defining relationship is with Nora Polyansky, who is both his wingmate and his lover. They display a close, sometimes public, affection for one another, and their partnership in combat makes them a nearly unstoppable force.
Ivanov undergoes a subtle but significant development that culminates in his demise. After a series of intense battles, he witnesses the death of Nora Polyansky at the hands of the resurrected Bird Human. Driven into a rage by her loss, he launches a reckless suicide attack against the ancient, powerful entity. His SV-51 is ultimately overwhelmed and destroyed by the Bird Human’s power, bringing his story to a violent end.
In terms of abilities, D.D. Ivanov is an exceptionally skilled pilot, widely considered to be on par with or even superior to Roy Focker. His experience as a test pilot and instructor grants him a deep understanding of aerial combat and variable fighter technology. He is shown to be a calm and composed pilot in the heat of battle, able to exploit the full performance of his advanced SV-51 fighter, which is customized with a black paint scheme and is a formidable match for the UN's VF-0. His piloting statistics, as referenced in various media, reflect extremely high proficiency in shooting and speed, making him a dominant force in any engagement.
