Description
Edgar LaSalle is an American who has served in the United Nations military since 1999, following the outbreak of the Unification Wars. He holds the position of Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), a role that places him in the rear seat of fighter aircraft where he manages radar and weapons systems. Before being transferred to the aircraft carrier CVN-99 Asuka II, he served aboard the Kitty Hawk class vessel Illustria.
In terms of personality, Edgar is known for being easygoing and cheerful, a demeanor that acts as a direct contrast to the colder, more reserved nature of his pilot and close friend, Shin Kudō. This dynamic leads him to compare his relationship with Shin to that of a persistent admirer chasing an indifferent beautiful woman, noting that he will keep following even if he gets stepped on. Beyond his flying duties, he is described as being quite skilled in singing and dancing, and he also enjoys clayworks and other forms of primitive art.
Edgar's primary motivation is his steadfast loyalty and support for Shin. Even after surviving a violent ejection from Shin's conventional F-14 fighter when it was destroyed by an enemy variable fighter, he never hesitates to continue serving as his copilot, this time in the new VF-0D Phoenix variable fighter. His role in the story is largely defined by his position in the back seat of Shin's aircraft, where he participates in combat patrols and training exercises as part of Skull Squadron under the command of Major Roy Focker. He also supports the archaeologist Aries Turner when she accompanies the squadron on an expedition around the Mayan Archipelago to search for relics related to an ancient alien civilization, though he appears slightly bemused by her enthusiasm.
Key relationships include his partnership with Shin Kudō, whom he also considers a friend. While impressed by Shin's piloting skills, Edgar is sometimes disheartened by what he perceives as Shin's lack of empathy. He also seems bothered by Shin's efforts to develop relationships with both of the local sisters, Sara and Mao Nome. Throughout the story, he remains a supportive and sometimes humorous presence, whether he is cheering Shin on during a hand-to-hand fight with a Marine officer or getting reprimanded by the head mechanic for overstressing the new variable fighter's engines.
Edgar shows notable development through his resilience. Despite being injured on multiple occasions, including breaking his foot during an engagement, he continues to perform his duties. In a final act of support, while confined to the infirmary with a broken foot, he uses his crutch to knock out a catapult officer, allowing Shin and Roy Focker to launch their fighters to rescue Sara Nome from the ancient relic known as the Bird Human. His last wish is for Shin to sign his leg cast, asking his friend to return safely.
His notable abilities include being a proficient and qualified Radar Intercept Officer for both the F-14A+Kai Super Tomcat and the more advanced VF-0D Phoenix variable fighter. He is competent enough to operate effectively in high-stress combat situations against technologically superior enemy aircraft and to support his pilot during dangerous missions on and around the Mayan Islands.
