Description
Hyobu Sakaki serves as the Chamberlain of the Mochizuki Clan, a position of significant authority that places him in command of the clan's ninja forces, including the Koga Team. As a leader, he typically operates from within the safety of his clan's territory, dispatching his spies and warriors to carry out investigations and missions on his behalf. His most notable action in the story is ordering a team of his ninja to investigate the mysterious destruction of Shimoda Village, a task from which only the kunoichi Kagero returns alive. Upon her return, rather than sending a larger force, he instructs her to complete the investigation alone.
Physically, Sakaki has the appearance of an aging Japanese man with a burly build, and he is typically seen wearing traditional kimono garments. His appearance suggests a leader who has spent many years directing his men from a position of relative safety rather than engaging in combat himself.
In terms of personality, historical records and accounts from his subordinates indicate that Sakaki was a noble leader of the Mochizuki Clan for many decades. However, following the events at Shimoda Village, his men began to notice a distinct change in his demeanor. He became notably cold and blunt when issuing orders, and was observed engaging in frequent, uncharacteristic sexual activity with his chambermaids. This dramatic shift in behavior is ultimately explained by a dark revelation: Sakaki had been murdered prior to these events, and his identity was being assumed by the treacherous Genma Himuro, the immortal former leader of the Yamashiro ninja. Under this disguise, Genma was able to infiltrate the Mochizuki clan's leadership and systematically destroy the Koga Team from within.
Sakaki's role in the overarching narrative is therefore a tragic and deceptive one. He appears to be the respected leader directing the mission against the Eight Devils of Kimon, but in truth, he is an early victim of the conspiracy. Near the climax of the story, an individual appearing to be Sakaki leads a band of Mochizuki warriors to Kashima Harbor, seemingly in response to a message from Kagero. In a cruel twist, it is revealed to be Genma still in disguise, who then strikes down Kagero, confirming that the real chamberlain had been killed days earlier. This act of impersonation serves as a pivotal plot point, demonstrating the reach and cunning of the film's primary antagonist.
Regarding his abilities, little is known or demonstrated about Sakaki's personal combat skills or physical prowess. He was likely a wise and capable leader who used his strategic mind and experience to command his clan effectively, but his assumed death prior to the main events of the story prevents any meaningful display of his individual fighting abilities. His significance is derived entirely from his political position and the manner in which his death and impersonation drive the plot forward.
