Description
Asuka Langley Soryu is designated the Second Child and the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02, introduced during the events recapped in the film Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth. Her background is marked by profound childhood trauma. As a young girl, her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, was left mentally unstable after a contact experiment with Unit-02, eventually treating a doll as her daughter while ignoring the real Asuka. The day Asuka was chosen as a pilot, she found her mother had committed suicide. This event led her to swear she would never cry again and to reject all dependence on others. She is of mixed heritage, with a Japanese mother and an American father, and she holds American citizenship despite having lived in Germany.

Asuka’s personality is a volatile facade of aggressive confidence and arrogance that conceals deep vulnerability and insecurity. She is fiery, outspoken, and fiercely proud of her abilities as a pilot, constantly seeking validation and attention to affirm her own worth. This need stems from her mother's rejection; she believes that only by being the best and performing perfectly can she avoid being abandoned or overlooked. Her catchphrase, "anta baka" (are you stupid?), is frequently directed at her peer, Shinji Ikari, as she mocks his passivity. Beneath this bravado, she is extremely fragile, and her psychological state deteriorates significantly when her piloting skills begin to fail, as she has no other sense of self-worth to fall back on.

Her primary motivation is a desperate need for self-affirmation. Piloting the Evangelion is the sole activity that gives her a sense of purpose and identity. She strives to be recognized as a capable, independent adult, which manifests as her rejection of childish things and her romantic pursuit of the older Ryoji Kaji, who acts as her former guardian and a figure of maturity. She seeks to prove her superiority over Shinji and the mysterious Rei Ayanami, viewing them as rivals for the attention and approval she craves.

Within the story of Death & Rebirth, Asuka serves as a central figure in the psychological exploration of the pilots. Her role becomes increasingly tragic as she grapples with her inability to maintain top synchronization scores and her fear of being replaced. Key relationships define her journey. She harbors an unrequited crush on Ryoji Kaji, who treats her with kindness but does not return her romantic feelings, leading to jealousy toward Misato Katsuragi. Her relationship with Shinji is complex; while she bullies and belittles him, she also develops hidden romantic feelings and is deeply disappointed when he fails to respond to her advances in a way she understands. She despises Rei Ayanami, whom she calls a "doll," because Rei embodies the emotionless, passive qualities and the connection to her mother’s trauma that Asuka despises.

Her development throughout the series, which culminates in the material covered by Death & Rebirth, is a sharp decline. After a series of battles where her performance falters and she feels emotionally abandoned, her psyche is shattered by the Angel Arael. The Angel’s mental attack forces her to relive her most painful childhood memories, including her mother’s suicide. This event leaves her in a catatonic state, unable to pilot her Evangelion and having lost all will to live, representing the complete collapse of the identity she built on pride and independence. As a notable ability, Asuka is a prodigiously talented and naturally gifted pilot, holding a university degree at a young age and initially achieving the highest synchronization scores among the children. She is also intelligent and resourceful in combat, often formulating battle plans. Her fighting style is aggressive and intuitive, relying on her confidence and natural reflexes.
