Movie
Description
Asuka Langley Souryuu is designated the Second Child and is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02. She is a girl of mixed German, Japanese, and American heritage who holds American citizenship and was raised in Germany. Physically, she is around fourteen years old with a height of approximately 155 centimeters, and her birthday is December 4th.

Her personality is defined by a sharp contrast between her public persona and her private self. Outwardly, Asuka is aggressive, arrogant, and exceptionally confident, often boasting about her skills as a pilot and her popularity. She is outspoken, energetic, and can be cruel, particularly toward her fellow pilot Shinji Ikari, whom she frequently calls foolish. However, this extroverted and brash exterior is a facade that conceals profound insecurity and vulnerability. Beneath the surface, she is deeply afraid of abandonment and struggles with intense self-hatred.

Her motivations are rooted in a traumatic childhood. When Asuka was four years old, her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Souryuu, was left mentally unstable after a contact experiment with Unit-02. Kyoko came to believe a doll was her daughter while neglecting the real Asuka, and she ultimately committed suicide. On that day, Asuka promised herself she would never cry again and became determined to be completely independent, proving her worth as an adult and as a pilot to avoid ever being abandoned again. This drive for self-sufficiency and external validation is her core motivation; piloting the Evangelion is not just a duty but the very foundation of her identity and self-worth.

Within the story of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, Asuka serves as a foil to the passive and introverted Shinji. While the Death segment recaps her introduction and her initially successful career as a pilot, the Rebirth segment focuses on her psychological collapse after being mentally violated by an Angel named Arael, which forces her to relive her worst memories. By the time of the film's climax, she is unable to synchronize with her Eva. Nevertheless, when NERV is attacked by the SEELE forces, she chooses to pilot Unit-02 once more, engaging in a desperate and brutal final battle against the Mass Production Evangelion series.

Her key relationships are complex and fraught with conflict. She harbors a one-sided, immature crush on her guardian, Ryoji Kaji, whom she views as the ideal adult, and his rejection of her advances deeply wounds her. She shares a tense romantic rivalry with her other guardian, Misato Katsuragi, over Kaji. Her relationship with Shinji is central; she is attracted to him but cannot express her feelings healthily, instead pushing him away with aggression and insults, as she mistakes vulnerability for weakness. She despises Rei Ayanami, whom she perceives as an emotionless doll, a reflection of the object for which her mother abandoned her.

Asuka undergoes a dramatic and tragic development. She begins as an exceptionally talented and celebrated pilot, but her inability to cope with failure and her fragile sense of self lead to a steady decline in her synchronization scores and mental stability. Her mind is shattered by the Angel Arael, reducing her to a catatonic state. In her final appearance in The End of Evangelion, which continues directly from Rebirth, she experiences a realization within Unit-02 that her mother's soul had always been protecting her. This allows her to achieve a moment of absolute clarity and piloting prowess before being brutally defeated, a sequence that represents both her ultimate rejection of dependence and her final tragedy.

As a pilot, Asuka is noted for her prodigious natural talent and aggressive fighting style, preferring direct, close-quarters combat with Unit-02's progressive knife. She graduated from university at a young age and is highly intelligent, though she struggles with the complexities of emotional communication.
