Description
Gendo Ikari, originally born under the surname Rokubungi, serves as the supreme commander of the special agency Nerv in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, including its presence in Death & Rebirth. During his university years, he was a solitary and troubled individual with a poor reputation until he met Yui Ikari, a brilliant researcher who became his wife and for whom he adopted her surname. Following the apparent death of Yui during a failed experiment with Evangelion Unit-01, Gendo became consumed by grief and underwent a profound personality shift, transforming into a cold, calculating, and emotionally detached figure. His primary driving motivation is an obsessive desire to be reunited with his lost wife, a goal he pursues through the secretive Human Instrumentality Project, even if it means subverting the plans of his superiors in the secret organization Seele.

Personality-wise, Gendo is defined by his pragmatic and manipulative nature, using people as tools to further his own agenda without regard for their emotional well-being. He is a brilliant scientist and a master strategist who is always seen wearing signature orange-tinted glasses and gloves, which he rarely removes. The gloves serve to hide severe burn scars on his hands, sustained while rescuing Rei Ayanami from a malfunctioning Eva, as well as to conceal the embryo of the first Angel, Adam, which he has implanted into his palm. He displays a distinct disrespect for authority and social hierarchy, often wearing his uniform unzipped and openly acting against Seele's directives to achieve his own version of Instrumentality.

In the story, Gendo holds the position of ultimate authority at Nerv, responsible for coordinating the defense of Tokyo-3 against the Angels using the Evangelion units. Despite this role, his actions are consistently geared toward his personal goal of god-like reunification with Yui, leading to violent clashes with Seele once the Angel threat is neutralized. His most significant relationship is with his son, Shinji Ikari, whom he abandoned as a young child and later summoned to pilot Evangelion Unit-01 without any display of paternal warmth. This abandonment stems from Gendo's deep-seated fear that he will only cause his son pain, a belief that ironically mirrors Shinji's own self-loathing and fear of interpersonal relationships. He shares a complex dynamic with Rei Ayanami, a clone created from Yui's DNA who contains the soul of Lilith; he shows her a level of concern and paternal care that he denies his own son, though this relationship ultimately deteriorates. Gendo also exploits the romantic feelings of the brilliant scientists Naoko Akagi and her daughter Ritsuko Akagi, carrying on affairs with both purely to secure their expertise for his schemes, casting them aside without genuine affection.

Gendo's development throughout the narrative reveals a man whose love for Yui, however genuine, leads him down a path of profound moral compromise and isolation. In the climactic events of The End of Evangelion, which concludes the story set up in Death & Rebirth, his plan to merge Adam with Rei in order to control Instrumentality fails when Rei rejects him and chooses to align with Lilith instead. During the resulting apocalypse, Gendo experiences a moment of profound vulnerability and regret, acknowledging his failings as a father and apologizing to Shinji before being consumed by a manifestation of Eva Unit-01. This final scene reveals that beneath his ruthless exterior, he is a deeply damaged individual who was ultimately afraid of being close to others, unable to break the cycle of pain he perpetuated. In terms of abilities, Gendo is not a combatant like the child pilots, but his power lies in his immense intelligence, political cunning, and scientific knowledge which allows him to orchestrate complex global conspiracies. His physical capabilities are augmented by the fusion of Adam's embryo into his hand, which grants him abilities related to the Angels and is a key component of his strategy to initiate his own version of Third Impact.
