Description
Asuka Langley Soryu is a fictional character from the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, appearing as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02 and designated as the Second Child. Born on December 4, 2001, she is of mixed heritage, with a German mother, a Japanese-American father, and holds American citizenship. Her background is defined by a severe childhood trauma: when she was four years old, her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, participated in a contact experiment with Evangelion Unit-02. The experiment stripped away the maternal part of Kyoko’s soul, driving her insane. Kyoko subsequently began caring for a doll as if it were her real daughter, completely neglecting Asuka. On the very day Asuka was chosen to become an Eva pilot, she ran to tell her mother the news, only to find that Kyoko had committed suicide. In the aftermath, Asuka vowed to never cry again and to take care of herself, becoming fiercely determined to prove her independence and worth.

Outwardly, Asuka projects a personality of fiery arrogance, high confidence, and exceptional talent. She is a prodigy who graduated from university at a young age and speaks Japanese fluently. She is loud, aggressive, and constantly boasts about being the best Eva pilot, often referring to others, particularly Shinji Ikari, with the catchphrase "Are you stupid?". However, this extroverted and charismatic facade is a defense mechanism that conceals a deeply vulnerable and insecure individual. Her core motivation stems from a desperate need for attention and validation, a direct result of her mother’s abandonment. She seeks to be recognized as an adult, which she equates with sexual maturity and being needed by others, particularly men. This is evident in her infatuation with her guardian, Ryoji Kaji, whom she sees as an ideal of mature masculinity, and her more complex, conflicted feelings for her peer Shinji.

In the story, Asuka serves as a foil to the more introverted and passive protagonist, Shinji. Her role initially brings a sense of dynamic energy and competitive drive to the pilot team. Her key relationships are fraught with psychological tension. She is jealous of Misato Katsuragi for her history with Kaji and resentful of Rei Ayanami, whom she dismissively calls "doll" due to her own trauma with dolls and her mother’s replacement of her with one. Her relationship with Shinji is central; she is attracted to him and craves his attention, but she is also frustrated by his passivity, which reminds her of the childlike qualities she wishes to reject. She erects a "Muro de Jericó" (Wall of Jericho) between them, daring him to cross it while simultaneously fearing intimacy.

Asuka’s character development is a tragic downward spiral. As the series progresses and Shinji’s synchro scores begin to rival and surpass her own, her sense of self-worth, which is entirely staked on her piloting ability, crumbles. This culminates in a psychological attack by the Angel Arael, which forces her to relive her darkest memories of her mother’s madness and suicide, shattering her mental defenses. After this, she becomes catatonic and unable to pilot, losing her sole reason for existence. Despite this breakdown, her notable abilities as a pilot are exceptional; she is a natural prodigy with high sync ratios, aggressive combat instincts, and the capacity to formulate effective battle plans, such as when she took command during the battle against the Angel Matariel. In the finale, she demonstrates a final, ferocious re-awakening of her fighting spirit, engaging in a desperate battle against the Mass Production Evangelions.
