Description
Asuka Langley Sohryu is a central character in the narrative, designated as the Second Child and the pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02. Born on December 4, 2001, she is of Japanese, German, and American heritage, holding United States citizenship while having been raised in Germany.

Her background is defined by a profound childhood trauma. When Asuka was four years old, her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, participated in a contact experiment with Evangelion Unit-02. The experiment caused a severe mental breakdown, leaving Kyoko unable to recognize her own daughter and believing a doll to be her child. Seeking her mother's approval, Asuka rushed to tell her when she was selected as a pilot, only to find that her mother had committed suicide by hanging. This event created a deep psychological wound, leading Asuka to vow to take care of herself alone and to build her entire self-worth on her identity as an Eva pilot.

Personality-wise, Asuka presents a facade of extreme confidence, arrogance, and competitiveness. She is proud of her appearance and her skills, often boasting about her piloting abilities and looking down on others, particularly her peer Shinji Ikari, whom she frequently insults with her catchphrase "are you stupid?". However, this aggressive exterior is a defense mechanism designed to hide a fragile and deeply insecure interior. Her behavior is driven by a desperate need for attention and external validation, a condition stemming from her mother's rejection and neglect. She is stubborn, hot-tempered, and has difficulty expressing her true feelings, especially affection or vulnerability.

Her primary motivation is to prove her own worth as an adult and as the best Eva pilot. She seeks to be seen as independent and superior, using her piloting success as the sole justification for her existence. This need for affirmation makes her intensely jealous of anyone who might surpass her, and she reacts with anger and panic when her piloting abilities begin to decline.

In the story, Asuka is introduced as a rival and foil to the protagonist, Shinji Ikari. Where Shinji is passive and withdrawn, Asuka is aggressive and domineering. She moves into Misato Katsuragi's apartment, creating a tense and complex household dynamic. Her role evolves from a confident and skilled fighter to a psychologically broken individual as the series progresses. After suffering a mental attack from an Angel that forces her to relive her worst memories, she sinks into a deep depression and loses her ability to synchronize with her Evangelion, effectively losing her sense of self.

Key relationships define her character arc. She harbors an intense infatuation with her former guardian, Ryoji Kaji, who represents an ideal of adult masculinity, though her feelings are largely unrequited. Her relationship with Shinji is central; she craves his attention and respect but is incapable of expressing affection and instead lashes out at him. This dynamic, often compared to the hedgehog's dilemma, prevents them from forming a stable emotional connection despite their clear mutual interest. She also shares a tense rivalry with the enigmatic Rei Ayanami, whose quiet efficiency and inexplicable success frustrate Asuka's need to be the best. Her guardian, Misato, serves as a surrogate adult figure, though Asuka often clashes with her authority.

Asuka is a child prodigy who earned a university degree as a teenager. As a pilot, she is highly skilled and aggressive in combat, demonstrating the ability to formulate battle plans quickly. She pilots the red Evangelion Unit-02, a unique unit that houses the soul of her mother, which is the source of their high synchronization ratio. Her notable abilities include generating a powerful A.T. Field for defense and wielding various weapons, such as the progressive knife and sonic glaive. Her piloting style is direct and forceful, contrasting sharply with Shinji's more hesitant approach.
