Description
Jimsy is a resourceful and fiercely independent young boy who becomes one of Conan’s earliest and most loyal companions. With sun-tanned skin, brown hair often tied back in a ponytail, and a height slightly shorter than Conan, his scruffy appearance reflects his wild upbringing. Living alone on a remote island, he has learned to survive by hunting lizards and frogs and gathering his own food, developing a pragmatic and sometimes cynical worldview shaped by years of self-reliance.
His personality is a blend of impulsive toughness and hidden warmth. Initially presented as anti-social and wary of others, he has a notable dislike for girls, whom he characterizes as crybabies who eat too much. Despite his young age, he exhibits eccentric habits, such as a fondness for smoking, which he calls taba-taba, and drinking alcohol, which he indulges in when the opportunity arises. He is gluttonous, somewhat selfish, and can be a wisecracking troublemaker. However, these rough edges mask a good-hearted and brave nature. His primary motivations are survival and loyalty; while he initially looks out only for himself, he is driven by a growing sense of friendship and a desire for a stable, happy life after meeting Conan.
Jimsy serves as Conan’s first same-age friend and a vital partner in their adventures. The two meet when Conan washes ashore on his island, and after an initial physical fight that neither easily wins, they develop a deep and lasting bond. Their friendship is tested and solidifies aboard the Barracuda, where Conan endures a brutal punishment on Jimsy’s behalf. Witnessing this selfless act forces Jimsy to confront his own selfishness, and he subsequently steps up to care for a feverish Conan, marking a pivotal shift from a survivalist to a devoted ally. Alongside the adult captain Dyce, the trio forms the core group that opposes the forces of Industria.
His key relationships extend beyond Conan. He shares a mischievous and effective partnership with Dyce, often working together to sabotage enemy machines and create chaos during their escape from Industria. Later in the story, at High Harbor, he works as a pig herder and has a contentious but ultimately warm relationship with a girl named Tera. Initially refusing her offer to join her brother’s gang because he is wary of girls, they eventually grow close, and in the series’ finale, Tera chooses to accompany Jimsy as he returns to Conan’s home island to start a new life.
Throughout the series, Jimsy develops from a cynical, solitary survivor into a courageous and reliable friend. He proves his bravery in combat, holding his own in physical fights against the exceptionally strong Conan and showing no fear in dangerous situations. While he cannot match Conan’s swimming ability or lung capacity, his physical strength, speed, and endurance are nearly on par. His notable abilities include proficient hunting skills with a bow, which is his main weapon, and an innate cleverness that proves useful in tight spots, such as when he and Conan use teamwork to defeat a giant wild boar. By the story’s end, he has fully integrated into a community, leaving behind his life of isolation for one of friendship and shared purpose.
