Description
Doctor Ban is a pivotal character introduced in the final arc of Galaxy Express 999, revealed to be the husband of Queen Promethium and the biological father of Maetel. By the time the story begins, his physical body has been destroyed, and his consciousness exists solely within a small capsule attached to a black, oval-shaped pendant that Maetel always carries. This pendant allows him to communicate with his daughter and others, often with a flashing meter indicating when he is speaking.
Before his current spectral form, Doctor Ban was a brilliant and renowned scientist from the planet La Metal, with expertise in medicine, robotics, and programming. In this role, he was one of the key creators of the machine bodies that would become the foundation of the Machine Empire. Queen Promethium originally tasked him with this project to save the population of La Metal, as its artificial sun was failing. Initially cooperating with his wife, Ban believed he was working to preserve life. However, he eventually came to recognize the profound inhumanity of replacing organic bodies and emotions with cold, mechanical parts. This conviction led him to take an anti-mechanization stance, strongly opposing Promethium's ambitions to build a Mechanical Empire. For this perceived betrayal, he was branded a traitor by his wife, and his spirit was sealed away, leaving him in his pendant-bound state.
Despite his disembodied existence, Doctor Ban retains a powerful will and a clear, unwavering motivation. He is consumed by regret for his role in creating the machine bodies and is determined to undo the damage he helped cause. His primary goal becomes the complete destruction of the Machine Empire he helped build, even if it means sacrificing his own existence as well as that of his wife. To achieve this, he manipulates events from behind the scenes, using Maetel as his primary agent. He forces her to continue her painful journey across the universe, guiding promising individuals like the protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino toward the empire's heart. He believes Tetsuro possesses the true love and courage necessary to resist mechanization and ultimately overthrow Promethium's dictatorship.
Within the story, Doctor Ban’s role is that of a hidden mastermind and a relentless force for the empire's destruction. He communicates with Maetel through various devices, issuing commands and keeping her focused on her mission. He also tests Tetsuro to ensure he is worthy of playing his part. At the climax of both the television series and the film, the pendant containing Doctor Ban is revealed to be the key to the empire's downfall, possessing the power to completely destroy the capital planet of the Machine Empire. In a final act of defiance, the pendant is thrown into the planet's core, triggering its destruction.
Doctor Ban’s most significant relationship is with his daughter, Maetel. Their bond is fraught with pain and contradiction. He clearly cares for her, yet his single-minded obsession with destroying the empire often overrides his paternal instincts. He ignores her suffering and forces her to endure her role in his plan, even when she expresses a desire to give up or die. His relationship with his wife, Promethium, is one of bitter opposition and regret. As the former co-creator of the machine bodies, he is the ideological and emotional foil to her cold, imperial logic. In contrast, his relationship with his other daughter, Emeraldas, is mentioned as being estranged.
Over the course of the narrative, Doctor Ban shows little emotional development, as his goals remain fixed from the moment he is sealed. However, his long-term plan comes to a dramatic conclusion. His character is defined by a tragic irony: a scientist who created a technology to save his people is driven to use that same technology's ultimate weakness to destroy the empire it spawned. In terms of abilities, while trapped in the pendant, Doctor Ban possesses several notable powers. The capsule can store vast amounts of data and energy, which can be used to heal Maetel when she is badly wounded. More importantly, when placed into the correct interface, the pendant can generate enough destructive energy to annihilate an entire planet, making him the single most effective weapon against the Machine Empire. His primary ability remains his genius-level intellect, which he uses to orchestrate a multi-year conspiracy from within a tiny capsule.
