Description
Emeraldas, often referred to as Queen Emeraldas, is a renowned space pirate and the captain of the titular warship, the Queen Emeraldas, in Leiji Matsumoto's fictional universe. Her background is deeply tied to the tragic history of her homeworld, the planet La Metal. She is the daughter of Queen Promethium and Dr. Ban, and the older twin sister of Maetel, the mysterious guide of the Galaxy Express 999. When her mother decided to convert the population of La Metal into immortal machine beings to survive a cosmic winter, Emeraldas and Maetel fled into exile, rejecting the soulless mechanization that would strip them of their humanity. A defining physical feature is the scar on her cheek, a permanent mark she retains as a proud reminder of her past vulnerabilities and a lesson learned from a previous, foolish conflict.
In terms of personality, Emeraldas is fiercely independent and lives by a strict personal code of honor. While she has a terrifying reputation across the galaxy as a professional killer who has executed countless men, she is not cruel or indiscriminate. She typically only kills those she deems cruel, unjust, or who dare to challenge her. She is deeply melancholic and lonely, wandering the sea of stars in search of kindred spirits and a new purpose, having lost her original reason for living after a great personal tragedy. Her pride is immense; she refuses to ever acquire a machine body, even when death is near, preferring death as a human over an eternity as a soulless machine like her mother. Despite her hardened exterior, she is deeply moved by individuals who hold onto their dreams and hopes in the face of impossible odds, showing a nearly maternal protectiveness towards young travelers whose determination reminds her of her lost love.
Emeraldas plays a crucial role as a legendary figure who serves as both an obstacle and an ally to the protagonists of Galaxy Express 999. She is known to know the location of elusive destinations, such as Count Mecha's Time Castle, which the young hero Tetsuro Hoshino seeks to avenge his mother's death. Her primary motivation is an endless, eternal journey through the cosmos. She travels seeking an earnest man and is forever searching for traces of her late husband, Tochiro Oyama, to whom she had dedicated her heart, body, and soul. Her actions are often guided by the memory of Tochiro, and she feels a sacred duty to protect those who carry his will or spirit, such as Tetsuro Hoshino and the stowaway Hiroshi Umino, to whom she bequeaths Tochiro's Cosmo Dragoon pistol.
Key relationships define her existence. Her bond with her twin sister Maetel is complex; they were once close but grew apart due to differing philosophies, with Emeraldas favoring direct, ruthless resistance against the Machine Empire while Maetel seeks redemption through compassion. Despite their rivalry, Emeraldas still cares for her sister and does not view her as an enemy. She shares a deep, unspoken kinship with Captain Harlock, as both are pirates who share the same ideals and code of conduct. He is one of the few people she considers a reliable friend. Her most profound relationship was with Tochiro Oyama, the engineer who repaired her ship. He was the only person who saw past her aggressive demeanor to her profound loneliness, and their brief marriage gave her a greater perspective on life before his death left her alone once more. She also has a daughter, Mayu, whom she left on Earth and distances herself from, unable to face the complicated memories of her father.
Throughout the story, Emeraldas shows minimal external development, as she is largely a static symbol of tragic nobility and relentless will. However, she experiences a reaffirmation of her purpose. Initially withdrawn and hostile to Tetsuro, she ultimately comes to admire his tenacity, recognizing the spirit of her husband within him. The news of Tochiro's final death devastates her, causing her to retreat, but a message from Tochiro beyond the grave compels her to support Tetsuro and join Captain Harlock in the final attack on La Metal. She begins as a ghost-like wanderer but ends as a key participant in the final battle, having found a temporary reason to fight alongside her allies.
Her notable abilities are formidable. As a native of La Metal, she possesses a greatly extended lifespan, potentially lasting a millennium. She is an exceptional combatant, wielding a Gravity Saber that functions as both a rapier and a laser rifle, though she prefers the blade. Her swordsmanship is so aggressive that few can match her, even when she is afflicted by a terminal illness. She is also an expert marksman, known for a quick-draw technique with her pistol that kills instantly. Beyond physical combat, she is a brilliant navigator and starship commander, fully in sync with her sentient vessel, the Queen Emeraldas.
