Description
In the 1992 film Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, the character C.13, commonly known as Android 13, serves as the primary antagonist. This android was created by the villainous Dr. Gero, the genius behind the Red Ribbon Army's android projects. Following Dr. Gero's death at the hands of his other creations, Androids 17 and 18, an underground supercomputer carrying Gero's consciousness and will continued his work. It was this computer that completed the development of Android 13, along with his companion units, Androids 14 and 15, tasking them with the sole mission of killing the hero Son Goku as revenge for Goku's destruction of the Red Ribbon Army in his youth.
Android 13 possesses a distinctly human-like appearance compared to his partners. In his base form, he stands 213 centimeters tall and is a muscular man with long, white hair and greenish-blue eyes. He dresses in a yellow-brown vest bearing the Red Ribbon logo, dark green trousers, and a matching gray and yellow baseball cap with the same insignia, giving him the look of an American truck driver or a character from the rural Southern United States. This visual inspiration aligns with his personality in the English dub, where he is given the mannerisms of a stereotypical redneck, complete with a thick Southern accent and colorful slang, referring to Goku as city boy or son. In the original Japanese version, however, his demeanor is far more serious, direct, and coldly logical, a killer android who speaks fluently and with authority about his programmed objective. He is the most eloquent of the three androids, with the other two uttering little more than Goku's name.
His motivation is singular and unwavering: to execute the mission programmed into him by his creator. He has no personal vendetta against Goku but follows his directives without question. He explains that anyone who stands in his way, whether protecting Goku or simply being in the wrong place, will also be eliminated. In the English dub, he delivers a brief, ironic lecture to the hero Future Trunks, condemning humanity for misusing its free will to create war, segregation, and hatred, before justifying his own violent, pre-programmed purpose. This moment adds a layer of twisted self-awareness, suggesting a belief that his lack of free will makes him superior to flawed humans.
In the story, Android 13 and his cohorts confront Goku and the Z-Fighters in a Northern glacier region. While Vegeta and Future Trunks battle and ultimately destroy Androids 14 and 15, Android 13 engages Goku directly. His combat data, pre-programmed with the Z-Fighters' techniques, allows him to fight on par with Goku, even after Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan. Android 13's key relationship is with his fellow androids, though it is purely functional. They are his subordinates, but he views them as components for his own evolution. Upon the destruction of 14 and 15, Android 13 activates a failsafe, absorbing their computer chips and power reactors into his own body. This act triggers his transformation into Super Android 13, a hulking, 262-centimeter-tall blue-skinned being with orange, spiky hair that resembles a Super Saiyan's, yellow eyes devoid of pupils, and a significantly more muscular and monstrous frame. In this evolved state, his personality degrades, becoming more feral and maniacal. He practically stops speaking, communicating only through roars and shouts, most notably a final cry of Goku's name upon his destruction.
As Super Android 13, his power increases dramatically. He effortlessly overpowers Super Saiyan Vegeta, breaks Future Trunks's sword, defeats Piccolo, and drives Goku into a corner, even punching him underwater to negate his mobility. His development is a linear path of escalation; he is a static character whose only change is a physical and power-based evolution that makes him more brutal and less rational. His notable abilities include standard android traits, such as flight without using ki and the ability to sense energy. His signature technique is the S.S. Deadly Bomber, an attack where he generates a large, spiraling red energy sphere that homes in on his target and is said to be capable of destroying half a planet. He is ultimately defeated when a desperate Goku gathers energy for a Spirit Bomb. In a unique move, Goku absorbs the completed Spirit Bomb's energy into his Super Saiyan body, granting him overwhelming power. With a single punch, Goku drives his arm through Super Android 13's abdomen, destroying him and finally fulfilling the computer's command for Goku to die, albeit with the android on the losing side.
