Description
Andróide #14 is a fictional character from the 1992 animated film Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!. He is an artificial being created by the computer of the late Dr. Gero, the mastermind behind the Red Ribbon Army's android projects. This computer continued Gero's work after his death, completing models 13, 14, and 15 with the sole programmed directive of killing the Saiyan warrior Son Goku. Andróide #14 is the fourteenth such unit in the doctor's numbered series.
In terms of physical appearance, Andróide #14 is designed to be large and heavily muscled, standing at an imposing 229 centimeters tall and weighing 154 kilograms. His visual design, provided by series creator Akira Toriyama, draws inspiration from stereotypical depictions of Native American warriors, particularly evident in his long, straight black hair tied in a ponytail and his strong facial features. He wears a distinctive outfit consisting of a brown leather spaulder on his left shoulder, a matching belt, large brown gloves, a long green kilt-like garment, and yellow and black boots. His skin has an unusual silver tone, and unlike many other androids created by Dr. Gero, his eyes are brown rather than blue. An interesting production note is that Toriyama originally labeled this character design as Andróide #15, but the animation studio, Toei, switched the names of the two androids during development.
The personality of Andróide #14 is extremely stoic and reserved. He is a character of few words, and in the original Japanese version of the film, he speaks only a single line on a few occasions: the name Son Goku. This near-total silence, combined with his perpetually scowling and cold expression, reinforces his nature as a single-minded machine built for destruction. Unlike his more talkative counterpart, Andróide #13, or the more eccentric Andróide #15, #14 simply follows his programming without any apparent emotion or desire for conversation. Some English adaptations of the film give him slightly more dialogue, but his core characterization remains that of a silent, formidable brute.
The primary motivation for Andróide #14 is entirely straightforward and programmed. He, along with his partners Andróide #13 and Andróide #15, exists for no other purpose than to execute the vendetta of his creator against Son Goku for the boy's role in destroying the Red Ribbon Army years prior. He shows no independent will, ambition, or capacity for reason beyond the completion of this mission. Any individual who interferes with this objective is treated as an obstacle to be eliminated.
In the narrative of the film, Andróide #14 plays the role of a secondary antagonist and a physical threat to the supporting heroes. He is activated by Dr. Gero's supercomputer alongside Andróide #15, and the two of them immediately set out to find Goku, tracking him to a restaurant in a city where Goku is with his family and friends. After a brief confrontation, the battle is moved to a remote glacial region to avoid civilian casualties. Here, #14 initially fights against Goku, demonstrating power sufficient to overwhelm the Saiyan in his normal state. When the young warrior Future Trunks arrives to assist, Andróide #14 shifts his focus to this new opponent. The android proves to be a formidable challenge for Trunks, even blocking a strike from his legendary sword with only two fingers. His power is such that Trunks, even in his normal state, is unable to land a decisive blow.
The key relationship for Andróide #14 is with his two fellow androids, with whom he was created and activated. He operates as a team alongside Andróide #13, the leader and most powerful of the three, and Andróide #15, the smallest and most talkative of the group. While #13 and #15 are more expressive, #14 serves as the silent, strong enforcer of the trio. However, this partnership ultimately serves a more sinister purpose. After Andróide #14 is destroyed by Future Trunks, who is forced to transform into a Super Saiyan to cut him in half with his sword, his remains do not signify the end of his function. His components, specifically his power reactor and computer chip, are specifically designed to be compatible with Andróide #13. Following his destruction, #13 absorbs these critical parts from #14 and #15, integrating them into his own body to trigger a transformation into a far more powerful being known as Super Andróide 13. In this sense, #14's ultimate role in the story is not just as a warrior but also as a necessary component for the main villain's final, more dangerous form.
Regarding development, Andróide #14 is a static character. As a purely mechanical being with a simple programmed mission, he undergoes no personal growth, change of heart, or character arc. His fate is to be a tool for his creator's revenge, first as an active combatant and then as spare parts for his brother unit.
Andróide #14 possesses a range of notable abilities that make him a dangerous opponent. Like many androids, he has the power of flight and can fire various types of ki blasts. He is incredibly strong and durable, able to fight evenly with a Saiyan of the Cell Games era in their base form and physically dominate Future Trunks before his transformation. One of his most impressive displays of speed and precision is catching Trunks's sword slash with just two fingers and tossing the young fighter away. He also has a scanning function, sometimes called 3D Scan Mode, which allows him to analyze his opponents and assess their power levels, though it may be less sophisticated than that of his partner #15. In various video games, his ultimate attack is named Android Charge 14, and other techniques include the Energy Squall, a barrage of energy spheres often used in combination with Andróide #15. Despite his strength, his power is not limitless, as he is ultimately outmatched and destroyed once Future Trunks taps into the full power of a Super Saiyan.
