Description
Broly is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball media franchise, created by screenwriter Takao Koyama and designed by series creator Akira Toriyama. He first appeared in the 1993 film Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan. The character is a pure-blooded Saiyan and is known as the Legendary Super Saiyan, a warrior of immense power said to appear once every thousand years. His name is a pun on the vegetable broccoli, following the naming conventions for Saiyans.
Broly was born on the same day as the series protagonist, Goku, with an extraordinarily high power level of 10,000. This immense latent power caused King Vegeta, the monarch of the Saiyans, to view the infant Broly as a threat to his rule. Fearing for his son Prince Vegeta's future position, King Vegeta ordered Broly's execution. Broly was stabbed and left for dead alongside his father, Paragus. However, Broly's survival instincts allowed him to survive the wound and protect his father when the planet was later destroyed by the tyrant Frieza, enabling the two of them to escape into space.
In his original appearance, Broly is a tall and powerfully built Saiyan with long, black hair and a generally stoic demeanor in his normal state. However, his personality is defined by a deep-seated and uncontrollable rage. This rage is specifically triggered by the presence of Goku, whose power and constant crying as an infant in the nursery next to Broly's pod deeply disturbed him. As an adult, this manifests as an obsessive hatred and a singular desire to torment and kill Goku, whom he refers to as Kakarot.
Broly's personality is not one-dimensional. When calm and under control, he is quiet and can even speak politely. However, his power is directly linked to his emotional state. As his anger rises, his sanity deteriorates. His father, Paragus, fearing his son's uncontrollable power, was forced to place a mind-control device on Broly to suppress his rage and destructive impulses. Despite this, Broly's hatred for Goku is so potent that it can overwhelm the device. Once he succumbs to his rage and transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan, he becomes a sadistic,狂暴, and nearly mindless force of destruction, delighting in the suffering of others and referring to his opponents as insects or worthless beings.
His primary motivation in the film is twofold: to fulfill his father's revenge against the royal bloodline of Vegeta and to satisfy his own deranged obsession with killing Goku. Paragus lures Prince Vegeta, Goku, and their companions to a new planet under the pretense of offering Vegeta a new Saiyan kingdom. In truth, Paragus plans to use Broly as a weapon to kill the prince. However, Paragus loses control of his son when Broly senses Goku, and the Legendary Super Saiyan awakens, turning his wrath on all the Z-Fighters.
Broly's most significant relationship is with his father, Paragus. Paragus is a manipulative and cruel parent who uses his son as a tool for vengeance. He keeps Broly in check with a mind-controlling device and views him less as a son and more as a weapon. Broly, for his part, seems to harbor a deep resentment for his father's control, and once he breaks free of the device, he kills Paragus without hesitation, showcasing his complete rejection of that relationship. His relationship with Prince Vegeta is one of a superior being looking down on a lesser one, as Broly effortlessly defeats the proud Saiyan prince, who is paralyzed with fear upon realizing Broly's true, legendary power. His entire existence in the film is defined by his antagonistic role against Goku, serving as a physical embodiment of a power far beyond anything the heroes have faced before.
Broly's character does not undergo any significant development in this film. He remains a static force of nature, defined entirely by his immense power and his single-minded hatred. His role in the story is to be an overwhelming obstacle that the heroes cannot defeat through conventional means, forcing them to rely on a desperate, combined-energy attack to finally overpower him.
Notable abilities define Broly's terrifying presence. As a Saiyan, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, and the ability to manipulate his life energy, or ki. His power in his base form is immense, but his transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan elevates him to an entirely different level. This form is visually distinct from standard Super Saiyan transformations. It grants Broly towering height, massively overbuilt muscles, and pale skin. His hair becomes a greenish-yellow or golden-green, and his pupils and irises vanish, giving him a blank, maniacal stare. Unlike the bulky but slow Ultra Super Saiyan form, Broly's legendary transformation does not hinder his speed. His ki aura is a distinct green color, and his power is described as infinite, with the ability to generate a seemingly endless supply of energy.
In this form, Broly demonstrates the ability to create and control green-hued energy spheres. He can fire a massive barrage of these spheres to devastate entire cities or focus them into a single, compact energy sphere that expands into a colossal, planet-destroying bomb upon impact. He also displays unique physical fighting styles, preferring crushing grapples and powerful clothesline strikes over traditional martial arts. Broly's power is such that he effortlessly defeats Super Saiyan Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, and Piccolo simultaneously, and survives a point-blank Super Kamehameha with no damage. He is ultimately defeated not by superior skill, but by a concentrated punch that channels the combined energy of all the Z-Fighters, causing his unstable power to overload his body and explode.
