Movie
Description
Android 18 is an artificial human, a cyborg originally created by the mad scientist Dr. Gero with the purpose of assassinating Son Goku. By the time of the film Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly, she has long since abandoned that mission. She is married to the warrior Krillin, with whom she has a young daughter named Marron, and leads a relatively peaceful life focused on her family.
In this story, Android 18’s primary motivation is financial. She is aggressively pursuing a large sum of money owed to her by the fraudulent martial arts champion, Mr. Satan. The debt stems from an agreement at the previous World Martial Arts Tournament, where she deliberately lost the final match to him in exchange for a substantial payment. When Mr. Satan stalls, she demonstrates her impatience and formidable power by destroying his mansion and his collection of undeserved championship trophies until he agrees to pay. This pragmatic, and at times intimidating, approach to personal gain is a key facet of her personality in this film.
Her role in the narrative is directly tied to this financial incentive. When an old rival of Mr. Satan, Jaguar, blackmails the champion into attending a tournament on a remote island, Android 18 accompanies him not out of loyalty, but to ensure he does not escape his debt. She initially observes the battles as a bystander, but when Jaguar unleashes a powerful clone of the legendary Super Saiyan, Broly, she chooses to intervene. Her decision to fight is not driven by a sense of heroism but by a practical need to protect her investment, as the death of Mr. Satan would mean she would never collect her money.
Android 18 proves to be a capable and powerful fighter, but she is ultimately outmatched by Bio-Broly. During the battle, she attempts to save Mr. Satan from the creature but is swiftly and soundly defeated. In a moment of vulnerability, she is saved by her husband, Krillin, who arrives on the scene. Despite his intervention, Krillin is also overpowered, and the two are forced to rely on the younger warriors, Goten and Trunks, to find a way to destroy their monstrous foe. This sequence highlights her key relationships: the transactional and antagonistic one with Mr. Satan, and the protective and devoted bond with Krillin, who risks his life for her.
Throughout the film, Android 18 shows little to no character development. She enters the story focused on material gain and exits on the same note. After Bio-Broly is finally defeated, she watches Mr. Satan struggle in the ocean and refuses to help him unless he doubles her payment, laughing at his misfortune. Her personality remains consistently sharp, cynical, and self-serving, providing a stark contrast to the more earnest and heroic motivations of the other protagonists. She shows no interest in the greater threat of the bio-warriors or the potential global catastrophe, only in her personal affairs.
As an android, she possesses extraordinary abilities. She has superhuman strength, speed, and durability, along with the power of flight. A unique trait is her energy source, which is not traditional ki and cannot be sensed by other fighters, making her an unpredictable opponent. Furthermore, her artificial body provides her with a virtually unlimited supply of stamina, meaning she never grows tired in battle. Despite these formidable powers, her encounter with Bio-Broly demonstrates that she is not among the absolute strongest fighters of this era, being clearly outclassed by the genetic clone of the Legendary Super Saiyan.
