Description
Hercule, widely recognized by his stage name Mr. Satan, is the reigning World Martial Arts Champion. His real name is Mark, though he is almost exclusively known by his public persona. In Western releases of the series, he is frequently referred to as Hercule to avoid religious connotations associated with his original name. He is a human martial artist who, prior to the emergence of Earth's mightiest warriors, legitimately claimed the title of the world's strongest fighter by defeating other ordinary human opponents.
On the surface, Mr. Satan is an egomaniac, a showboating blowhard who boasts endlessly about his strength and takes credit for the victories of others. He enjoys a life of luxury, indulging in high-class steak, expensive cars, and his status as a global celebrity. This persona is driven by a powerful ego and a deep-seated need to maintain his public image as the savior of humanity. However, beneath this facade of greed and cowardice lies a fundamentally decent and kind-hearted individual. He genuinely cares for the innocent and becomes righteously angry when the helpless are threatened. While often fearful when confronted with godlike powers, he has shown moments of great courage, particularly when his loved ones or a sense of justice compels him to act.
In the larger story, Mr. Satan’s primary role is that of an unwitting fraud who consistently takes credit for defeating planet-threatening villains he never actually fought. After Gohan defeats Cell, Mr. Satan claims the victory, becoming an even greater hero to the public. This pattern of claiming the Z Fighters as his disciples preserves his status but also sets the stage for his most significant contribution. During the battle with the monstrous Majin Buu, his role evolves. He fails to defeat Buu through trickery, but instead becomes a genuine friend to the initially childlike and destructive creature. His kindness towards Buu and a hurt puppy named Bee brings out the good in the monster, redeeming Buu and turning him into an ally.
His most crucial act of heroism comes at the climax of the Buu conflict. The people of Earth refuse to lend their energy to Goku for the Spirit Bomb, but they will give it to their champion, Mr. Satan. Using his immense popularity and oratory skills, he convinces the world to raise their hands, unknowingly providing Goku with the power needed to destroy Kid Buu and save the universe. Because of this, by the end of the story, even Goku and his friends come to recognize him as a noble hero.
Key relationships define his character development. He is fiercely protective of his daughter, Videl, though she is often embarrassed by his boastfulness and aware that his fighting skills have deteriorated from lack of practice. He is also a loving father, and his affection for Videl is genuine. His most unique relationship is with Majin Buu, whom he befriends. He tearfully begs Vegeta to spare Buu's life, recognizing that Buu was manipulated by the wizard Babidi, and his loyalty to the monster is absolute. This friendship is a cornerstone of his redemption arc, proving that his capacity for love and loyalty is not a performance.
Regarding his abilities, Mr. Satan is genuinely superhuman by real-world standards, but he is completely outclassed by the Z Fighters and their enemies, possessing no ability to manipulate ki. He has demonstrated superhuman strength, such as punching through a bus, pulling multiple buses, and smashing fourteen stone tiles with a single chop. He is also incredibly durable, having survived blows from Perfect Cell and Kid Buu that would kill any normal person. His notable techniques include his signature Dynamite Kick and the Satan Punch, simple martial arts moves he names dramatically. To compensate for his lack of flight, he occasionally uses a jetpack, and he carries a variety of explosives and weapons, though he often refuses to use them in front of cameras to protect his reputation. He is also a master of social manipulation, using his fame and oratory to control public perception. A version of him also exists in a theoretical fusion with Goku, known as Gotan or Gokule, a comical hybrid that Goku briefly imagines when desperate for a fusion partner.
