Description
Hirudegarn is the main antagonist from the 1995 animated film Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon. A colossal and destructive monster, its origins lie on the planet Konats thousands of years before the main events of the series. Originally, Hirudegarn existed as a statue of a demon god, placed to watch over the planet and purify the evil ki from the hearts of its inhabitants. This changed when a group of star-traveling black magicians known as the Kashvar performed an ancient ritual, transforming the entity into a rampaging Phantom Majin, a simple beast driven to wreck and kill everything in its path.

In terms of personality, Hirudegarn displays no emotions beyond hatred and rage. It does not appear to possess conscious sentience or enjoy causing pain; rather, it is driven purely by instinct, making its destructive nature akin to a natural disaster rather than a knowingly evil being. Its default attitude is one of anger, and it is aware of anyone who attacks it. The creature follows its master's will only until it inadvertently destroys them, after which its sole focus becomes mindless devastation.

Hirudegarn's role in the story is that of an ancient, sealed evil. After the Kashvar were defeated by the people of Konats, a wizard used an enchanted sword and two magical ocarinas to cut the monster in half. Because it could not be killed at the time, its upper body was sealed inside a young warrior named Tapion, and its lower half was sealed inside Tapion's younger brother, Minotia. The brothers were then placed in enchanted music boxes and sent to opposite ends of the universe to ensure the monster could never be reunited. Thousands of years later, a surviving Kashvar named Hoi hunts down the boxes, kills Minotia, and releases Hirudegarn's lower half. He then travels to Earth and tricks the Z-Fighters into opening Tapion's box, freeing the upper half and allowing the monster to fully revive.

Key relationships involving Hirudegarn are primarily functional. Hoi is the one who revives it, intending to use the beast to rule the universe, though Hirudegarn ultimately kills him inadvertently by crushing him underfoot. Tapion and Minotia are its unwilling hosts, with Tapion in particular able to temporarily freeze or reseal the monster by playing his ocarina. The Z-Fighters, including Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and the fused Gotenks, are its primary opponents who attempt to destroy it after its full revival.

The monster undergoes notable development during the final battle. Initially in its complete but standard form, it overwhelms several heroes. After taking a barrage of attacks from Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Hirudegarn forms a cocoon around itself and emerges in a more powerful transformed state. In this new form, it gains wings, the ability to fly, and even greater strength, allowing it to defeat Gotenks with a single blow and overpower Gohan and Vegeta with ease.

Hirudegarn possesses several notable abilities. Its most distinctive power is the ability to turn its body into a mist or smoke, becoming intangible and invincible. In this state, physical attacks and energy blasts pass right through it, and it can teleport to reappear behind an opponent. The creature only becomes solid and vulnerable for the brief moment when it launches an attack itself. It can also absorb the life energy of victims using its tail, similar to the villain Cell. Other abilities include firing powerful energy waves and massive fireballs from its mouth, creating giant explosions with itself as the nexus, and breathing fire. It has incredible strength, speed, and durability. The only things that can effectively harm it are the magical ocarinas, which can paralyze it, and Tapion's enchanted sword, which can cut its flesh. In the end, it is destroyed by Goku's Dragon Fist technique.
