Description
Alice Maresato is a seven-year-old girl who becomes a member of the main survivor group after the outbreak of a catastrophic pandemic. She has pink hair and purple eyes. Standing 128 centimeters tall, her appearance reflects her youth and vulnerability.
Before the crisis, Alice lived a normal life with her parents, her father working as a newspaper reporter. On the night the disaster began, she fled with her father while becoming separated from her mother. While seeking refuge, her father was killed by the armed residents of a house from whom he had begged for shelter, an act of violence that occurred directly in front of her. Shortly after this traumatic event, Alice was rescued from attacking zombies by Takashi Komuro and his group, and she subsequently joined their team.
Alice possesses an innocent and passive personality. Despite the horrors surrounding her and the loss of both her parents, she is noted as the only member of the group who consistently maintains a cheerful and optimistic attitude. This positive demeanor, however, is a front for a deep inner pain, as she often cries herself to sleep at night and suffers from nightmares due to her trauma. She is friendly and looks up to the older members of her group as older brothers and sisters, forming a fierce loyalty to them and refusing to leave their side even for her own safety. She is also known to be bilingual, capable of speaking both English and Japanese.
Alice's primary role within the survivor group is that of a source of hope and humanity, reminding the others of what they are fighting to protect in a world that has descended into chaos. She is seen as the group's mascot, and the other members go to great lengths to shield her from the darkest aspects of their new reality and to prevent her from having to fight. While she does not possess any combat abilities, she is resourceful and finds ways to contribute. She is a remarkably skilled bike rider, capable of performing stunts, which serves as her primary means of mobility and evasion. In critical situations, she has helped by passing ammunition to Kohta Hirano during a firefight and using firecrackers, given to her by a police officer, to distract the zombies.
Throughout the story, Alice develops significant relationships with the other survivors. She is rarely seen without a small dog named Zeke, whom the group picked up at the same time they rescued her. She forms an especially close bond with Kohta Hirano, who acts as a protector and older brother figure. Her relationship with Saya Takagi is sister-like, with Saya often being strict but caring, giving Alice the nickname Munchkin. Takashi Komuro, who rescued her, is another key figure she looks up to as a brother. Alice's emotional development is marked by her refusal to allow anyone to sacrifice themselves for her, as it reminds her of her father's death. This stubborn loyalty and her determination to stay with her new family demonstrate her growth from a passive victim into an active, though non-combative, member of the group who provides crucial moral support.
