Description
Kouta Hirano is a supporting character in High School of the Dead. He is a student at Fujimi High School and a member of the school’s marksmanship club, though his physical appearance and demeanor set him apart from the typical image of a precision athlete. Hirano is short, stocky, and bespectacled, with a round face and a constant, often unsettling grin. He is openly obsessed with firearms, military tactics, and survivalist culture, which initially leads many of his peers to dismiss him as an oddball or a potential threat.

In terms of personality, Hirano is enthusiastic, talkative, and surprisingly cheerful even in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Where others show fear or despair, he often displays excitement, treating the outbreak as a real-life test of his extensive theoretical knowledge. Despite his eccentricities, he is not malicious or unstable; rather, he is deeply principled about protecting his group and applying his skills responsibly. He shows little tolerance for those who waste resources or act recklessly, but he remains loyal and cooperative when his abilities are needed.

Hirano’s primary motivation is to survive and to use his expertise with weapons to protect his friends. The collapse of society allows him to move from being a marginalized enthusiast to a key asset, and he embraces this role without arrogance. He also seeks to prove that his knowledge—often ridiculed before the crisis—has genuine value in a life-or-death situation.

Within the story, Hirano acts as the group’s firearms specialist and tactical consultant. He is the one who identifies weapon types, advises on firing strategies, and helps secure ammunition and gear from locations like a police station and a survivors’ camp. His calm under fire and practical understanding of ballistics and cover become essential during several battles against the undead and hostile humans. Although he is not the leader, his input heavily influences the group’s combat decisions.

Key relationships include his growing camaraderie with Kohta Hirano (no relation to the protagonist Takashi Komuro) and Saeko Busujima. He forms a particularly close bond with Saya Takagi, the group’s strategist. Despite their constant bickering—Saya often calls him a gun nut or pervert, while he retorts with sarcasm—their partnership is effective. Hirano respects Saya’s intelligence, and she comes to rely on his technical knowledge. He also develops a protective attitude toward the younger Alice Maresato, showing a gentle side beneath his intense exterior.

Over the course of the series, Hirano undergoes subtle but meaningful development. Initially seen as an outcast, he gains confidence as his skills save lives. He also matures emotionally, learning to balance his enthusiasm for violence with the weight of real killing. When the group faces human antagonists, Hirano hesitates more than he does against zombies, indicating a growing moral awareness. He remains socially awkward, but his value to the group is unquestioned by the end of the available story.

Notable abilities include his encyclopedic knowledge of firearms, from handguns to assault rifles and even improvised explosives. He is a capable shot, though his main strength is tactical analysis: understanding firing lanes, ammunition conservation, and weapon maintenance under duress. He also demonstrates surprising physical resilience, able to carry heavy loads and keep pace with more athletic survivors. However, he has no formal combat training beyond his club activities, and his short stature and lack of speed are acknowledged weaknesses in close-quarters melee situations.
