Description
Boo is a five-year-old boy and a classmate of Shinnosuke Nohara in the Sunflower Class at Futaba Kindergarten in Kasukabe. His most defining physical characteristic is a perpetually trailing nasal mucus, a feature he can manipulate for various tricks and which he considers an integral part of himself. He typically wears a yellow shirt and green shorts. He is often described as the tallest member of his immediate friend group due to his head shape, though his overall stature is that of an average kindergartener.
On the surface, Boo appears slow, expressionless, and perpetually lost in thought, speaking very little and often only uttering a soft "boo". However, this placid and aloof exterior belies a sharp and surprisingly intelligent mind. He frequently delivers insightful, sensible, and sometimes profound observations with a single, well-chosen line, often cutting to the heart of a matter when his peers are confused. Despite his reserved nature, he possesses a strong sense of justice and becomes genuinely upset if his mucus or his hobby of collecting oddly shaped stones is mocked.
Boo's motivations are simple and consistent with his quiet personality. He is driven by a genuine curiosity about the world, showing a deep interest in artistic things, traditional crafts, urban legends, and mysterious phenomena like UFOs. After kindergarten, he often spends time watching craftsmen create tatami mats at a local shop, demonstrating an appreciation for detail and process uncommon for his age. He finds great joy in his collection of strange and unusual stones, a hobby that is a central part of his identity.
Within the story, Boo is a core member of the Kasukabe Defense Squad, the group of five friends that includes Shin-chan, Toru Kazama, Nene Sakurada, and Masao Sato. While not the leader, he often serves as a stabilizing anchor and the secret weapon of the group. His ability to almost completely vanish his presence is a unique skill that proves useful in various adventures. In times of crisis, his calm demeanor and quick, decisive actions help guide the others. He shares a particularly close bond with Shin-chan, often being the most passive and accepting of Shin-chan's bizarre ideas, and joining him in unconventional games that confuse the other children. Boo is also a loyal and supportive friend, comforting Masao when he is upset and teaming up with Shin-chan to defend animals or stand up for others.
Boo's background is notably mysterious. His real name has never been officially revealed, though one theory suggests it may be Igawa Botaro. Unlike his friends, whose families are well-known, Boo's home life is shrouded in ambiguity. His mother has made fleeting, shadowy appearances, and his father's face is always hidden when he appears, leading the other children to imagine what they might look like. It is known that he has an older sister, and that his family keeps a pet snail named Tsumuro. Despite the enigma, his friends do know where his house is located.
Beyond his mucus manipulation and presence-erasing skills, Boo possesses a surprising range of abilities. He can start a motorboat, has an expert-level knowledge of operating the kindergarten bus, can instantly count the seams on a baseball, read complex characters, and even produce calligraphy that rivals a professional. He also has a meticulous and orderly side, feeling compelled to straighten a slightly crooked remote control. While generally slow-moving, he is capable of surprising athletic feats, such as winning a relay race against his peers. In group play, he consistently volunteers for the role of a pet dog or cat, a small detail that speaks to his unassuming and agreeable nature.
His character has seen subtle development, with some depictions showing a deeper voice as the series progressed. In certain movie storylines, his nature is drastically altered. For example, in one film, a mystical incident removes his nasal mucus, causing his personality to shift from gentle and slow to sharp, intense, and tyrannical, a stark contrast to his usual self. In another, he is partially transformed into an animal but retains his human consciousness to help his friends. These scenarios highlight that his defining traits, even his mucus, are fundamentally linked to his core identity and gentle spirit.
