Description
Miss Polly, known in the original Japanese version as Masumi Ageo, is a young kindergarten teacher at Futaba Kindergarten in the anime Shin Chan. She is a relatively new staff member, twenty-three years old, and is assigned to teach the Tulip class, which includes the main character Shinnosuke Nohara and his friends. Her background centers on her recent entry into the teaching profession, and she initially struggles with the demands of managing a classroom of energetic five-year-olds.
Miss Polly’s personality is defined by a pronounced nervousness and a tendency to experience anxiety. She is easily flustered and often suffers from panic attacks when faced with a large group of children, which is an everyday situation in her job. This timid and anxious demeanor is her default state. However, she has a notable and unusual characteristic: whenever her glasses are removed—typically as a result of Shin-chan’s antics—her vision becomes blurred, and her personality undergoes a complete transformation. In this state, she becomes highly aggressive, fearless, and assertive, a stark contrast to her usual self. This alternate personality emerges whenever she loses her glasses, creating a recurring source of comedic tension.
Her motivations are somewhat ambiguous, but she is shown to have a strong fixation on a man named Kuroiso. The nature of this fixation varies between the original manga and the anime: in the manga it is presented as admiration, while in the anime it takes on a more romantic overtone. This fixation drives some of her actions and contributes to her development as a character. Over the course of the series, she gradually becomes more outgoing and extroverted, though she never fully loses her underlying nervousness.
In the story, Miss Polly serves as one of the supporting teachers at the kindergarten. Her role primarily involves interacting with the children, especially Shin-chan, whose mischievous behavior often triggers her anxiety and occasionally leads to the removal of her glasses. She also interacts with the other teachers, such as Midori Yoshinaga and Ume Matsuzaka, and forms part of the kindergarten’s faculty. Her key relationship is with Shin-chan, who is both a source of stress and, indirectly, a catalyst for her personality shifts. Her fixation on Kuroiso also plays a role in her personal storyline.
Notable abilities are largely tied to her personality shift: when her glasses are off, she gains a boldness and physical assertiveness that she otherwise lacks. This flip is her most distinctive trait and is consistently portrayed as a dramatic change. Aside from this, she is depicted as a competent teacher when she can manage her anxiety, though her nerves often undermine her effectiveness. Her development is slow but positive, as she learns to cope better with her job and begins to express herself more openly.
