Description
Mitzy Nohara is a central figure in the family life of the Nohara household. She is twenty-nine years old and serves as the primary homemaker and caretaker. Her daily routine revolves around housework such as cleaning, laundering, cooking, and sewing, though her success in these tasks varies considerably. She also spends time gossiping with neighbors and talking on the phone, and her favorite hobby is taking naps. While she possesses a caring and nurturing nature at heart, her positive traits are frequently overshadowed by a number of personal shortcomings. Mitzy is often vain about her appearance and is sensitive about being called flat-chested. She can be quick-tempered and hypocritical, laying down strict rules for her husband and children only to break them herself once out of sight. She administers harsh physical punishment to her son when he exasperates her, but she is more lenient with her baby daughter. She tends to spend freely on herself and her daughter while pinching pennies on the needs of her husband and son. Her repeated attempts at dieting and household savings plans almost always fail within the first week; for example, she is easily drawn to bargain sales but buys in excessive quantities, undermining the savings she intends to make. She also secretly keeps money aside for her own use. Despite these flaws, Mitzy occasionally shows genuine generosity and maternal warmth, such as when she takes time to play with her son. Her relationship with her son Shinnosuke is one of constant bickering, as his mischievous behavior frequently provokes her anger and often leads to her chasing or hitting him. With her husband Hiroshi, she often shifts blame for household problems onto him, and he is a frequent target of her temper. In contrast, she dotes on her infant daughter Himawari, showering her with attention and spending. Her own parents are Yoshiji and Hisae Koyama, and she has older and younger sisters. Mitzy's role in the story is that of the grounding, often frazzled mother whose efforts to manage the household and raise her children provide a constant source of comic conflict and occasional heartfelt moments. She has no supernatural abilities; her notable attributes are her capacity for household management, albeit imperfectly, and her seemingly endless supply of failed schemes for self-improvement and economy.
