Description
Mari de l'Exércit Escarlata, whose full name is Mari Fukidemono, is a supporting character in the anime Shin chan. She is a seventeen-year-old high school student who attends the Mutsuka Girls' High School and is one of the three core members of the Saitama Scarlet Army, also known in some dubs as the Kamikazes of Kahzu. The Scarlet Army is a group of sukeban, or female delinquents, styled after the 1980s Japanese bōsōzoku and sukeban subcultures. They present themselves as a formidable and fearsome gang, but in practice they are largely inept and their attempts at intimidation are consistently undermined by the antics of Shinnosuke Nohara, who treats them as a comedy troupe rather than a serious threat. Mari, alongside her companions Ryuko Okegawa and Ogin, regularly attempts to carry out delinquent activities such as confronting rival groups, but they often end up taking on mundane part-time jobs such as lifeguard assistants, vendors, or babysitters in order to earn money. Her personality is defined by a mix of bravado and underlying frustration, as she tries to uphold the group’s tough image while being unable to command respect from Shin-chan or the wider community. Her motivations are tied to the group’s shared goal of being recognized as a genuine threat, though their efforts are undercut by their own incompetence and Shin-chan’s persistent interference. Within the story, Mari functions as a recurring comic foil, appearing in episodes where the Scarlet Army tries to assert dominance or complete a job, only to have their plans derailed by the kindergarten child. Her key relationships are with Ryuko, who acts as the group’s loud and aggressive leader, and Ogin, the quieter and more observant member. The three share a strong camaraderie, often coordinating their schemes with a secret hand signal code that Shin-chan occasionally manages to decipher by accident. Over the course of the series, Mari does not undergo significant character development, remaining a static figure whose role is to provide situational humor through the gap between her self-image and reality. In terms of notable abilities, she exhibits no supernatural or combat skills; her primary activity is participating in the group’s low-stakes criminal posturing and temporary jobs. The Scarlet Army as a whole are portrayed as harmless and slightly pathetic, and Mari fits this mold perfectly as a teenager who desperately wants to be feared but is consistently humbled by a five-year-old.
