TV-Series
Description
Hiroshi Nohara is the father of the Nohara family and works as a section chief at the Futaba Corporation, serving as the sole source of income for his household. At 35 years old, he stands approximately 180 centimeters tall and originally comes from Omagari in Akita Prefecture. He met his wife Misae when he was 29, and after she became pregnant with their first son Shinnosuke, the two married. The family later expanded with the birth of their daughter Himawari, and they live in the city of Kasukabe in Saitama Prefecture with their pet dog Shiro.

His personality embodies the classic Japanese salaryman archetype, balancing the daily grind of long work hours, crowded train commutes, and the pressures of office politics with the responsibilities of being a husband and father. He is generally portrayed as a relaxed, good-natured, and sometimes lazy individual who looks forward to a cold beer after work and enjoys watching television programs featuring young women, often getting overly excited to the annoyance of his wife. While he can be unreliable in small domestic matters and tends to be pushed around by the stronger-willed Misae, he reveals a deep, unwavering love for his family when situations become serious. Beneath his often silly exterior lies a strong sense of duty and a willingness to stand up and fight courageously to protect his loved ones, a trait that becomes particularly evident in the theatrical films. His primary motivation is the well-being and happiness of his family, even as he shoulders significant financial pressures, including a 32-year mortgage.

His role in the story is central as the patriarch of the Nohara household. A recurring theme is his dynamic with his wife Misae, who maintains totalitarian control over the family finances. Hiroshi hands over his entire paycheck to her each month and receives a small allowance in return, which often leads to comedic bickering over spending. Despite these squabbles and his occasional wandering eye, which is swiftly punished by Misae's infamous temper, their relationship is fundamentally one of deep affection and mutual dependence. With his son Shinnosuke, Hiroshi shares a playful and often mischievous bond. They both share an appreciation for pretty women, which frequently lands them both in trouble with Misae. Unlike Misae's more authoritarian parenting style, Hiroshi prefers to reason with his son and defuse situations with a calm "now, now," rarely resorting to physical discipline. He is a caring and gentle father to his daughter Himawari, having even quit smoking for her sake before she was born. A running joke throughout the series is the legendary pungent odor of Hiroshi's feet and socks, which is so powerful that family members often use them as a comedic weapon or a means to render others unconscious.

While his core traits of being a tired, financially-strapped salaryman who loves his family remain consistent, subtle aspects of his character are occasionally highlighted. His commitment to his role as provider is absolute, and moments of crisis consistently pull him from his usual laid-back state into that of a determined protector. He takes great pride in his family and is shown to be deeply moved by their successes and concerned during their hardships. His notable abilities extend beyond his corporate job. He is a skilled driver of both cars and motorcycles, a capable DIY enthusiast who can handle household repairs, and, when the situation demands it, a surprisingly effective fighter who can use improvised tools and even his infamous foot odor to defeat enemies.
