Description
Misae Nohara is the mother and primary caretaker of the Nohara family in the long-running anime and manga series. She is twenty-nine years old, though she often claims to be younger. As a full-time housewife, she handles the cleaning, cooking, laundry, sewing, and child-rearing, though her success in these tasks varies. At her core, Misae is a deeply caring and nurturing person who loves her family above all else, but her positive qualities are frequently undermined by her many flaws. She has a strong will and a notoriously short temper, often sparked by the outrageous antics of her five-year-old son, Shinnosuke, whom she disciplines with swift and physical punishment. She is known to be a paragon of hypocrisy, issuing strict rules to her husband and children only to break them herself the moment she is out of their sight. She administers what is described as brutal punishment to her husband and son, and on rare occasions even to her infant daughter, when they displease her. Misae is the source of countless diet and savings plans that invariably fail within the first week. She is easily drawn to bargain sales, buying in such extreme quantities that any intended savings are lost, and she secretly hoards money for her own personal use. She tends to spend as little as possible on the less essential needs of her husband and son while allowing herself and her daughter, Himawari, to splurge. Despite these negative traits, she is also noted for occasional acts of great generosity and a fierce dedication to her family. Her motivations are rooted in a desire to be a good wife and mother, but her approach is often impulsive and contradictory. She is frequently referred to as one of the strongest housewives in Japan, a title earned by her tough personality and surprising physical strength. Misae is the daughter of Yoshiji and Hisae Koyama and has two sisters, the older Masae and the younger Musae. She married Hiroshi Nohara after meeting him at her part-time job, and together they had Shinnosuke and Himawari. Her relationship with her son is the main source of the series' comedy, as her constant attempts to control him are repeatedly frustrated by his unpredictable behavior. She also has a complex dynamic with her husband, often complaining about his salary and habits but ultimately showing deep concern for him. Over the course of the series, Misae has shown subtle development, occasionally displaying moments of genuine wisdom and vulnerability that add depth to her character, though she remains fundamentally the same comically flawed and loving mother.
