Description
El Dorago is the primary antagonist in the first One Piece film, a pirate captain driven by an insatiable and obsessive desire for gold. His name and character design suggest a visual inspiration from a dragon or a lion, a connection Luffy himself makes by likening him to both a cat and a lion.
In terms of background, El Dorago is an anime-exclusive villain with no presence in the original manga storyline. At some point in his life, he gathered a crew and dedicated himself entirely to amassing wealth. His obsession led him to pursue the legendary treasure of the Great Gold Pirate Woonan, a massive hoard of gold said to be hidden on a specific island. To obtain the means to find it, El Dorago tracked down Woonan's former crew and slaughtered them all, stealing their treasure map and also capturing a young boy named Tobio, who was hiding on their ship.
El Dorago's personality is defined by his extreme, fetishistic greed. He is immensely arrogant, self-centered, and ruthless, stopping at nothing to achieve his goal. His love for gold is so profound that it dictates every aspect of his life. He wears shoulder pauldrons made of gold and has sharp, durable golden caps over his fingernails, which he uses as weapons in combat. He is seen affectionately rubbing his cheek against gold, and his obsession causes him to reject other valuable treasures such as gems and diamonds. This greed makes him stubborn and dismissive of any possibility that the treasure might not be pure gold, and he is entirely uncaring of the well-being of anyone who gets in his way, including his own subordinates.
Throughout the movie, El Dorago serves as the direct obstacle to the Straw Hat Pirates. His role in the story begins when his crew attacks the Straw Hats, who are starving. He uses his Devil Fruit power to fire a powerful sound blast that separates the crew, scattering them across the ocean. Upon reaching the island where Woonan's treasure is supposedly hidden, he captures Usopp, who buys time by claiming to be a treasure hunter. El Dorago is repeatedly tricked by Usopp and Nami, who feed his greed with lies about the treasure's location, leading him to waste his power demolishing a castle.
Key relationships in the story are largely antagonistic. He holds a tyrannical command over his crew, particularly his second-in-command, Golass, whom he pays with gold coins for doing his bidding. His primary opposition is Monkey D. Luffy, whose complete disinterest in material treasure and resilient nature directly contrasts with El Dorago's core drive. He also has a violent relationship with Tobio and the boy's grandfather, Ganzo, whom he attacks without hesitation.
As a character, El Dorago shows little to no development or redemption. He remains fixated on the gold until his final defeat. His primary role is to be a formidable adversary who embodies the themes of greed versus freedom, with his downfall serving as a validation of the Straw Hat Pirates' values. He is ultimately defeated by Luffy, who literally bounces El Dorago's own sound blast back at him before sending him flying into the sea with a powerful Gomu Gomu no Bazooka attack.
El Dorago possesses several notable abilities that make him a significant threat. As a Devil Fruit user, he has eaten the Goe Goe no Mi, a Paramecia-type fruit that grants him the power of the Scream-Scream powers. When he yells, he can create a powerful wave of sound that functions like a destructive laser beam, capable of causing massive explosions and demolishing stone structures. He can control the intensity of this blast. In addition to his Devil Fruit powers, his golden nails serve as sharp weapons that can pierce stone, and his golden armor is highly durable, withstanding multiple blows from Luffy before eventually shattering under sustained assault.
