Description
Mutenroshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is a venerable martial arts master and the creator of the legendary Kamehameha technique. In Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical Adventure, he serves as the teacher of Son Goku and Kuririn, having taken them on as disciples at his secluded island home known as Kame House. His primary background is that of an ancient and wise fighter who has trained many notable warriors, including Grandpa Son Gohan and the Ox King. He is easily recognized by his bald head, thick white beard and mustache, trademark sunglasses, and the large turtle shell he wears on his back as part of his training regimen.

Mutenroshi’s personality is a blend of deep wisdom and comedic lecherousness. He often behaves as a dirty old man, expressing infatuation with attractive women and using perverse humor, yet he is fundamentally a kind-hearted and disciplined mentor. His motivations in this film center on completing the training of Goku and Kuririn and preparing them for the World Martial Arts Tournament hosted by Emperor Chiaotzu in the country of Mifan. He takes pride in his students’ growth and arranges for them to test their skills in the competition.

In the story, Mutenroshi plays a supportive role. He is seen in the early scenes putting Goku and Kuririn through rigorous exercises, such as running while carrying heavy turtle shells, swimming, and practicing martial arts techniques. Once the tournament begins, he remains in the background, allowing his students to stand on their own. He does not directly involve himself in the main conflict involving Master Shen, Mercenary Tao, or the search for the Dragon Balls, but his training gives Goku and Kuririn the foundation they need to face the challenges ahead.

Mutenroshi’s key relationships are with his two students. He acts as a father figure and stern yet affectionate instructor to both Goku and Kuririn. He also has a long-standing rivalry with the Crane Hermit, Tsuru-sennin, who leads the opposing martial arts school, though this rivalry is not a major focus in this particular film. He does not interact directly with many other characters in the movie, but he is indirectly connected to the wider cast through his students.

Development-wise, Mutenroshi’s character in Mystical Adventure remains consistent with his portrayal in the original Dragon Ball series. He is already a fully realized master, and the film does not show him undergoing any significant personal change. His main contribution is as a catalyst for the younger characters’ journeys.

Notable abilities associated with Mutenroshi include his immense physical strength and speed despite his aged appearance, his mastery of the Kamehameha wave, and his ability to teach powerful techniques to his students. He is also skilled in strategy and reading opponents, though these traits are not showcased prominently in the movie. His iconic walking stick and turtle shell are part of his daily training equipment. Overall, Mutenroshi serves as the wise old mentor who sets the stage for the adventure that follows.
