Description
In the third Dragon Ball film, Mystical Adventure, which presents an alternate retelling of the original series' events, Kame Sennin continues his role as the legendary martial arts master and founder of the Turtle School. Often referred to as the God of Martial Arts, he is an Earthling who has lived for over three centuries, having trained under the master Mutaito and later climbing Karin Tower to further his own education. Within this specific movie, his primary function is that of a teacher, having accepted the young Son Goku and Krillin as his latest students. The film opens with a montage demonstrating the rigorous and often bizarre training regimen he has designed for the pair, which includes delivering milk, navigating lakes filled with crocodiles while being chased by dinosaurs, and running while wearing massive, heavy turtle shells. His personality is a familiar blend of profound wisdom and profound lasciviousness. He is a dirty old man who is easily distracted by attractive women, a trait that provides much of the film's comedic relief, yet this is balanced against his genuine dedication to preserving and passing on the true spirit of martial arts.
Kame Sennin's motivation in Mystical Adventure is straightforward: to provide his young students with a real-world test of their newfound skills. To this end, he decides to enter Goku and Krillin into the world's largest martial arts tournament, which is being held in the country of Mifan. This decision sets the plot in motion, as the tournament serves as the central backdrop for the unfolding political intrigue. While Kame Sennin accompanies his students to Mifan and observes the chaos of the tournament and the coup d'état plotted by the corrupt Minister Tsuru Shen and the assassin Tao Pai Pai, his role in the direct action is more limited than in other stories. He is present alongside Krillin to face off against Mifan's soldiers and the robotic Sergeant Metallic, but he is ultimately defeated by the powerful disciple of the Crane School, Tenshinhan. This defeat demonstrates that while Kame Sennin was once an unparalleled master, a new generation of fighters is beginning to surpass him. Nevertheless, his presence as a moral and guiding authority remains, as he is a living testament to the principles of the Turtle School, which values discipline, hard work, and friendship.
His key relationships in this film are almost entirely centered on his role as a mentor. He is the exasperated but proud teacher to the determined and gifted Goku and the clever but sometimes cowardly Krillin. He also has an unspoken but clear rivalry with Tsuru Shen, the master of the Crane School, representing a long-standing philosophical and technical divide between two schools of martial arts. While his perverted antics, such as trying to peek at female fighters or getting distracted by Bulma and Lunch in a comedic nun disguise, are played for laughs, his underlying wisdom is what gives weight to the story. He understands the importance of the tournament not just as a contest of strength, but as a crucible for his students' growth.
As a character, Kame Sennin does not undergo a significant development arc within this single film. Instead, he serves as a static anchor, representing the established order and wisdom from which the younger heroes branch out. His notable abilities, however, are on full display despite his defeat. He is the inventor of the Kamehameha wave, a technique of focused ki energy that he developed over fifty years, and which he can produce in a devastating form. When truly serious, he can enter a state of 100% Power, where his frail body bulks up with massive, exaggerated muscles. In this form, his speed and power increase dramatically, allowing him to fire a much more powerful Maximum Power Kamehameha. Other techniques in his arsenal include the Mafuba, also known as the Evil Containment Wave, a dangerous technique used to seal away powerful demons, as well as other named attacks like the Drunken Fist, the Afterimage Technique, and the Thunder Shock Surprise, all of which reflect his vast centuries of experience and mastery over martial arts and ki manipulation.
