Description
Mutenroshi, known as the Turtle Hermit, is an elderly martial arts master who appears as a supporting character in the 1996 film Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to Power. His background is that of a centuries-old hermit and the creator of the renowned Kamehameha technique, living in seclusion on a small island known as Kame House with his anthropomorphic turtle companion, Umigame. He is bald with a thick white beard and mustache, typically wears sunglasses and either beach clothing or a martial arts suit, and carries a walking stick. His personality blends profound wisdom and martial arts insight with a pronounced lecherous streak, often making unwanted advances toward attractive women and engaging in comic perversity. Despite this, he is fundamentally kind-hearted and deeply devoted to the path of martial arts. His primary motivation is to train worthy students and pass on the traditions of the Turtle School, while also indulging in his simple pleasures—including food, television, and reading adult magazines. In The Path to Power, Mutenroshi plays the same crucial role he does in the original Dragon Ball story: he meets Goku and Bulma early in their journey, agrees to assist them in exchange for viewing Bulma’s underwear, and later takes Goku and Krillin as his students. He subjects them to rigorous training—such as delivering milk, farming underwater, and wearing heavy turtle shells—to build their strength, speed, and discipline. Within the film’s narrative, Mutenroshi serves as a mentor figure who guides the young heroes and provides both comic relief and unexpected displays of power when the situation demands it. His key relationships include his students Goku and Krillin, whom he trains with genuine care; his friendship with Bulma, who tolerates his antics; and his bond with Umigame, his longtime roommate. He also maintains a sibling relationship with his sister, the fortune-teller Baba. In terms of development, Mutenroshi remains a consistent character throughout the movie: he is a wise, dependable master whose perverted behavior does not overshadow his genuine wisdom or his willingness to fight when needed. His most notable ability is the Kamehameha, a powerful energy wave he invented and teaches to his students. He also possesses a technique that allows him to inflate his muscles dramatically, greatly increasing his physical strength and ki output, enabling him to perform feats such as extinguishing large fires or destroying the moon. His martial arts skill is exceptional, making him one of the strongest Earthlings at the start of the series, and his experience provides critical guidance to the protagonists as they face the Red Ribbon Army in the movie.
