Description
Commander Red is the dwarfish commander-in-chief and founder of the Red Ribbon Army, a powerful and ruthless military organization. He serves as the primary antagonist in the film Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to Power, which retells an arc from the original Dragon Ball series. His background is rooted in a deep-seated inferiority complex stemming from his short stature. As a child, he was bullied and nicknamed shrimp by his peers, while girls rejected him because of his height. These childhood experiences cultivated a lifelong obsession, and he ultimately used his vast family wealth to create the Red Ribbon Army as a means to an end.
Personality-wise, Commander Red is a ruthless, petty, and impatient leader who holds a grandiose view of his own importance, claiming to be one and the same with the army itself. He is incredibly disloyal, viewing his vast military force as expendable pawns to be sacrificed for his personal desires. He frequently abuses his subordinates, is sarcastic and insulting towards his second-in-command, Staff Officer Black, and has no qualms about executing his own soldiers for even minor failures or to satisfy his own vanity. This cruelty is displayed in his habit of siccing his pet cat on officers who enter his office to test their reflexes, with failure potentially resulting in death. He is also a chain smoker, often seen with a pipe or cigar. His defining trait is his intense self-loathing regarding his height; he despises being around taller people and constantly demands that the much taller Officer Black keep his distance. He even uses artificial means to appear taller, such as a spring-loaded seat in his car and commissioning portraits that greatly exaggerate his height.
While the Red Ribbon Army's official goal, known to the public and most of its members, is world domination, Commander Red's true motivation is purely personal and petty. His sole desire in gathering the seven Dragon Balls is to wish for an increase in his own height. In The Path to Power, this vanity is further highlighted when he orders the execution of General Blue, ostensibly for missing one Dragon Ball, but the real reason is Blue's offense of standing too close to him while being much taller.
In the story of The Path to Power, Commander Red leads the Red Ribbon Army from his headquarters. After learning that the young warrior Goku possesses a superior Dragon Radar and is also collecting the Dragon Balls, Red deploys various officers to retrieve them and eliminate the child. The film portrays the Red Ribbon Army as a significant threat, successfully capturing several of Goku's friends, including Bulma, Master Roshi, and Yamcha. Red's key relationship is with Staff Officer Black, his loyal but often belittled second-in-command. Another important figure is Android 8, a powerful and gentle artificial human created by the Red Ribbon Army. While Red and the army view Android 8 as a failed, defective weapon due to his pacifism, Android 8 becomes a loyal friend to Goku, leading to a confrontation with the army.
Commander Red undergoes no positive development or redemption. He remains steadfast in his petty obsession until his demise. His role culminates when Goku storms the Red Ribbon headquarters. As Goku defeats the army's remaining forces, Red panics and finally reveals to Staff Officer Black his true plan is to wish for height. Enraged that the entire army was founded and sacrificed for such a vain and meaningless goal, and feeling personally betrayed, Black fatally shoots Commander Red. In The Path to Power, this death occurs slightly differently than in the original series, with Red being shot in the side and then falling from a ledge.
Commander Red possesses no notable combat abilities and is never seen fighting. He is physically weak, no stronger than an ordinary human, and relies entirely on his army, hired assassins like Mercenary Tao, and mechanical devices such as the massive Battle Jacket piloted by Staff Officer Black to do battle for him. His power has been listed in supplementary material as a mere 100, emphasizing his lack of personal strength.
