Description
In the 1996 feature film Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to Power, C-8, also known as Android 8 or by the nickname Hacchan, plays a significantly expanded role compared to his original appearance in the manga and television series. He is an artificial human, created as the eighth model in a line of weaponized androids developed by the Red Ribbon Army with the assistance of Doctor Gero. Within the context of the film, he is presented as a creation of Doctor Gero, stored within a section of Muscle Tower dedicated to the scientist's various inventions.

In terms of background, C-8 is a massive, stitched-together being whose physical design is intentionally reminiscent of the classic cinematic depiction of Frankenstein's monster, complete with a large, blocky head, a furrowed brow, and visible scars. Despite this fearsome appearance, his personality is the direct opposite of what his looks suggest. C-8 is profoundly gentle, kind-hearted, and possesses a strong aversion to violence and conflict. This pacifistic nature is considered a critical flaw by the Red Ribbon Army, and they label him a failed experiment because he consistently refuses to follow orders that involve hurting others.

His role in the story of The Path to Power follows this core conflict. C-8 is first activated by General White within Muscle Tower and ordered to eliminate the young hero Son Goku. Initially, he appears to be a mindless weapon with eyes rolled back, programmed to attack. However, just as he is about to deliver a final blow, he regains his full consciousness and reverts to his true, non-violent self, refusing to continue the fight. This act of defiance is the catalyst for his friendship with Goku, who defends him against his Red Ribbon masters and gives him the affectionate nickname Hacchan.

One of the key relationships in the film is the bond that forms between C-8 and Goku. As Goku has no prejudice against him and treats him with genuine kindness, C-8 experiences friendship for what is likely the first time. This connection fundamentally shapes his motivations. Having found a friend, C-8 is driven by a powerful desire to protect Goku. This motivation culminates in the film's climax, where C-8 heroically intervenes as Goku is attacked by Commander Black piloting a giant mecha on the Red Ribbon Army's island base. To shield Goku from the mecha's devastating assault, C-8 throws himself into the path of the attack, enduring a prolonged and relentless barrage. His body is ultimately blown apart and destroyed, a selfless sacrifice made to ensure his friend's survival.

Development is a central theme for C-8 in this film. He evolves from being a dormant tool of war, a failed weapon with no purpose, into a heroic figure who makes a conscious choice to act on his own will. His pacifism is not presented as cowardice; instead, it is a strong moral stance that makes his final decision to fight in defense of another all the more meaningful. His sacrifice represents the ultimate rejection of his programming as a killer, choosing instead to give his life as a protector.

Regarding his notable abilities, C-8 possesses immense physical strength and durability, a standard trait among early model androids. His most distinctive ability in The Path to Power, however, is the addition of a jet pack system integrated into his body, which allows him to fly at great speeds to intercept the giant mecha and come to Goku's aid. This ability is unique to his portrayal in this film. The conclusion of the story provides a final, happy development for the character. After Commander Black is defeated, Son Goku uses the wish-granting dragon Shenron to revive C-8, bringing him back to life and ensuring his friendship with Goku can continue.
